Since the First University Convocation in 1999, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has been producing alumni (ex-students or former students). Since then, administrative procedures have been implemented to conduct activities, such as the establishment of the Alumni Association in 2002 and the setting up of the Alumni Relations Centre in 2009. In a Meeting of the Board of Directors on 20 August 2012 (see Board Paper 19/26/2013), an approval was obtained to set up the Alumni Centre of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, which then became effective on 9 July 2012. UMS has thus far produced many alumni, and the number has been increasing each year. Apart from enhancing the relationship between the alma mater and its alumni, the Alumni Centre has been playing the role of assisting the University in generating income. In view of the need, the Alumni Centre is planning to set up the UMS Alumni Fund in an effort to achieve its goal of a creating a sense of concern and awareness among the alumni of UMS, particularly in regard to our alumni’s contributions to the alma mater.
The Alumni Fund of UMS is therefore established to achieve the following objectives:
To finance activities related to student welfare and the University’s development;
To sponsor students in the form of scholarships (for excellent students) or tuition fees (for students who are qualified and in need);
To provide long-term contributions to students, alumni and the local community; and
To finance the construction of the administrative building of the Alumni Centre.
