28 May 2016, in conjunction with Sabah SME Week 2016, organized by Sabah State Government, UMS and ERDEC holding a Business Idea Challenge competition where members of public are invited to pitch their business ideas to a panel. Participants are given a 3-minutes time frame to present their business ideas. There are three categories for the competition, namely the open category, tertiary level category for college and university students and secondary students category. Winners of the open and tertiary categories will receive RM1,000 cash prize, RM500 for first runner-up and RM300 for second runner-up. While, secondary school winner will receive RM500, followed by RM300 and RM200 for the second and third places respectively. All prizes and additional 3 consolations prizes RM200 each were sponsored by Sabah Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) to all categories.

There are 13 participants for open category, 4 participants for school category and 42 participants registered for tertiary level category which mostly from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).  4 prizes won by our Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) students namely, first runner-up won by Tang Yi Hao (1st year) with the business idea titled ‘Bar’, second runner-up won by Ang Iye Szin (2nd year) with business idea called ‘Simplicity’, and two consolations prizes won by group technopreneurship, EZShot with their products ‘EZ Handler’ and individual by Kok Khong Wei (2nd year) with business idea ‘Bus locator’. Whereas, another two prizes, which is grand, prizes and another consolation won by UMS Sandakan.
