On Semester 1 Session 2017/2018, Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) have received three (3) students from Universiti Utara Malaysia under Student Mobility Program. The faculty has organized a goodwill tour to welcome them. The purpose of the tour is to introduce the beauty and uniqueness of the Ranau District and the cultural of Sabahan community.
The tour was conducted on 26 November 2017 and supervised by two FCI lecturers, Cik Nordaliela Mohd Rusli and Cik Norhayati Daut. The journey started as early as 6am and it took two (2) to three (3) hours to reach Ranau. Upon arrival at Kundasang, students were introduced with Bukit Crystal which is one of the famous scenic locations at Kundasang town.
After that, the tour proceeds to the “Sungai Moroli” at Kampung Luanti, Ranau to visit the fish conservation area. The students were also been introduced with the “tagal” system which found on the river. They also had the opportunity to get to know some local foods preparation methods such as “Serunding Tahau”.
Later, the tour was continued to a tea plantation which located near to Kampung Luanti. In addition to view the tea leaf processing, the history of the Prisoner of War (POW) was also introduced. The tea plantation is the route for POW Route which used in Sandakan Death March during the war between 1942 and 1943. During the POW, Australian and British forces were forced to walk 260km from Sandakan to Ranau.
Next destination was Poring Hot Springs. The students were briefed on the history of the existence of hot springs and its properties. They also had the chance to try the 175-meter long canopy route that is 40 meters height from the ground.
The tour was ended around 4.30pm when the rain began to fall heavily. The journey back to Kota Kinabalu began after visiting the vegetable and fruit markets at Kundasang. The students arrived at their hostels around 6.45pm.
