INDUSTRY

Since the establishment of FMHS in 2003, we are constantly open for collaborations and exposure to various medical industries locally and globally. As on 31st December 2018, UMS had produced 1132 medical and nursing alumni. Although the numbers are small, however we are making waves locally and abroad. Several of the alumni are key leaders in the UMS FMHS, making important decisions and management matters. Apart from that, approximately 7% of the medical alumni had achieved post graduate studies in various medical fields. We produce key medical industry professionals in government and private hospitals. Approximately 30% of our nursing alumni are working in various Singapore hospitals, for example Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore General Hospital and Ng Teng Fong Hospital to name a few. We are also seeking potential collaborations from various companies for example Suria Medicare Concierge Bhd, International Nursing Health Australia (INHA) Australia and Oxley.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

PUPUK

PuPUK is an acronym for “Program Perkongsian Universiti Keluarga” or University-Family Partnership in Community WellnessProgram. In this program, medical and nursing students will have a family based medico-social learning experience. Each student is engaged, throughout the 5 years medical course, with a foster family. It is incorporated as part of the medical program at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) University Malaysia Sabah. The project takes place in the rural region of Kudat on the Northern tip of Borneo. The foster Families are selected by community leaders in Kudat. The students are exposed to a wide range of problems, unmet needs within a family and services available in the community. The students are required to see the families three times a year and during this time they assess their health related behaviours. The students are given a selection of questionnaires which they can administer to the family, in order to understand them better

The objectives of PUPUK are :

  • To appreciate the structure and functions of a family as an important unit in determining and influencing wellness and illnesses.
  • To appreciate the family dynamics in facing life events related to medicine

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMMES

The faculty actively engages with various community outreach programmes in collaboration with several local non governmental organization ( NGO) and agencies. We worked hand in hand closely with Sabah Branch Taiwan Tzu Chi Buddhist Organization, Sabah Branch Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and Sabah Medical Association (SAMA).
