POST-GRADUATES DEGREE PROGRAMS

AQUACULTURE

Aquaculture program at the Borneo Marine Research Institute  aims to undertake scholarly research in need-based areas of sustainable aquaculture development;  to provide high-quality education, hands-on experience and training in aquaculture;  to disseminate knowledge and facilitate its application to scientific, social and economic problems related to aquaculture. The objectives of the program are to provide  advance knowledge for building up post-graduates that are capable in planning and designing innovative research in the areas related to sustainable aquaculture; to produce post-graduates that are able to develop strategies and policy for the sustainable development of aquaculture sectors; to build up and train competent post-graduates that are readily served as knowledgeable human capital in the aquaculture industry; to generate new knowledge in aquaculture through innovative and novel research and  to develop leadership in all aspects of aquaculture. Upon graduation, graduates are expected to have sufficient knowledge related to  sustainable aquaculture development; to have technical skills in experimental research design, systematic data collection, analysing and interpreting research findings with minimum supervision; to be able to conceptualise solutions to problems in aquaculture using both analytical and critical thinking skills; to be able to communicate research outputs both orally and in writing; to be able to work effectively with peers, and stakeholders, and have the ability to organise ideas pertaining to societal issues in sustainable aquaculture development;  to be able to adhere to ethical issues and practice professionalism in conducting research; to be able to manage information related to the development of sustainable aquaculture for lifelong learning; to be able to manage project related to sustainable aquaculture development and create job opportunity and to be able to become a resource person that can provide technical advice to aquaculture community.

MARINE SCIENCE

Marine Science program aims to undertake scholarly research in need-based areas of marine science; to provide high-quality education, hands-on experience and training in marine science; to disseminate knowledge and facilitate its application to scientific, social and economic problems related to marine environment and resources. Its objectives are to provide advance knowledge to build up post-graduates are capable to plan and design experiment for innovative research in the areas related to marine science; to produce post-graduates that are able to develop strategies and policy for the development in the marine science sectors on a long run basis; to build up and train post-graduates as workforce for sustainable development in marine based industry on local environment; to acquire knowledge through research and develop leadership in all aspects of marine science sectors. Upon graduation graduates should be able to synthesize knowledge in sustainable management of marine resources and environment; to adapt practical skills leading towards innovative ideas in sustainable management of marine resources and environment; to identify the techniques in analysing and evaluating different forms facts and figures in marine science; to provide professional services to society on issues related to marine environment and resources; tTo differentiate the interactions between human induced activities and its effects on aquatic ecosystem and capable to take appropriate measures; to be capable of designing new experiment, collection of specific data, analyse data with suitable techniques and finally interpret  to produced scientific reports independently; adhere to ethical issues and professional code of conduct in research; competent in the reporting research findings both orally and in writing; can work effectively with peers, scholarly communities, stakeholders, and showing leadership quality; able to appraise problems related to marine environment and resources critically using scientific skills; to integrate components of research to develop lifelong learning in sustainable marine environment and resources.

MARINE BIOTECHNOLOGY

Marine Biotechnology program is established with the aims to undertake scholarly research in bio-mining of marine resources using biotechnological tools; to provide high-quality education, hands-on experience and training in marine biotechnology; to disseminate knowledge and facilitate its application to scientific, social and economic problems related to marine biotechnology; to generate economics from marine resources-value-added products. The program objectives are to provide advance knowledge to build up post-graduates that are capable in planning and designing experiments for innovative marine biotechnology research; to produce post-graduates that are able to develop strategies and policy for the development in the marine biotechnology sectors on a long run basis; to build up and train post-graduates as workforce for marine biotechnology industry; to acquire knowledge through research and develop leadership in all aspects of marine biotechnology. Upon graduation, graduates should have sufficient knowledge in marine biotechnology; identify the techniques in analysing and evaluating different forms facts and figures in the development process of marine products; develop and organise ideas related to societal issues in the marine biotechnology to advice strategies planning for sustainable exploitation of marine resources; differentiate the interactions between human induced activities and its effects on aquatic ecosystem and capable to take appropriate measures; be able to design experiment, collection of specific data, analyse data with suitable techniques; be able to interpret results with minimum supervision; be able to adhere to ethical issues and professional code of conduct in research; To be competent in the presentation of research report both orally and in writing, can work effectively with peers, stakeholders, and showing leadership quality; to be able to conceptualise solutions to problems in marine biotechnology using both analytical and critical thinking skills and to be able to gather and manage information on marine biotechnology for lifelong learning.

FISHERIES

Fisheries Science aims to undertake scholarly research in assessment of fish catch, sustainable management of marine fisheries and stock enhancement; to provide high-quality education, hands-on experience and training in sustainable fisheries and management; to disseminate knowledge and facilitate its application to scientific, social and economic problems related to fisheries. The objectives of this program are to provide advance knowledge to build up post-graduates which are capable to plan and design experiment for innovative research in the areas related to fisheries; to produce post-graduates that are able to develop strategies and policy for the development in the fisheries sectors on a long run basis; to build up and train post-graduates as workforce for sustainable development in fisheries; to acquire knowledge through research and develop leadership in all aspects of fisheries. Upon graduation, graduates should have sufficient knowledge in sustainable fisheries; identify the techniques in analysing and evaluating different forms facts and figures in fisheries;  develop ideas based on data collections on existing fisheries resources as well as  related to societal issues and adopt conclusion and suggestion for the sustainable management of fisheries; to differentiate the interactions between human induced activities and its effects on aquatic ecosystem and capable to take appropriate measures; to be capable to design experiment, collection of specific data, analyse data with suitable techniques and finally interpret  to produced scientific reports with minimum supervision; adhere to ethical issues and professional code of conduct in research; to be competent in the presentation of research report both orally and in writing, can work effectively with peers, stakeholders, and showing leadership quality; to be able to conceptualise solutions to problems in sustainable management of fisheries using both analytical and critical thinking skills; gathering and managing information on sustainable fisheries development for lifelong learning.  

COASTAL AND MARINE MANAGEMENT

The aims of Coastal and Marine Management program are to undertake scholarly research in need-based areas of marine science; to provide high-quality education, hands-on experience and training in coastal and marine management; to disseminate knowledge and facilitate its application to scientific, social and economic problems related to coastal and marine environment and resources. Its objectives are to provide advance knowledge to build up post-graduates are capable to plan and design experiment for innovative research in the areas related to coastal and marine management; to produce post-graduates that are able to develop strategies and policy for the development in the coastal and marine environments on a long run basis; to build up and trained post-graduates as workforce for sustainable development in coastal and marine based industries both on local and international levels; to acquire knowledge through research and develop leadership in all aspects of coastal and marine management. Upon graduation, graduates are expected to be able to synthesize knowledge in sustainable management of coastal and marine resources and environment; able to adapt practical skills leading towards innovative ideas in sustainable management of resources in the coastal and marine environments; to identify the right techniques in analysing and evaluating different forms of facts and figures related to coastal and marine science; to provide professional services to society on issues related to coastal and marine environment and resources; to differentiate the interactions between human induced activities and its effects on coastal and marine ecosystems, and capable to take appropriate measures; to be able to design new experiment, collection of specific data, analyse data with suitable techniques and finally interpret  to produce scientific reports independently; adhere to ethical issues and professional code of conduct in research; to be competent in the presentation of research report both orally and in writing, can work effectively with peers, scholarly communities, stakeholders, and showing leadership quality; to be able to appraise problems related to coastal and marine environment and resources critically using scientific skills; able to integrate components of research to develop lifelong learning for sustainable development and exploitation of coastal and marine resources.

 
ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Candidates willing to register for Master of Science or PhD degree programs can access the application forms from the official website of the Centre for Post-graduate Studies: http://www.ums.edu.my/pascav2/

They can, however, liaise with BMRI for selection of research topic and development of research proposal.
