Preparatory Centrer for Science and Technology (PPST), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will continue to take initiatives in promoting STEM, in order to embed a sense of enjoyment in learning Science and Technology among students. Unlike the previous year, the concept of UMS Science Foundation Open Day was improved to a two-days STEM Carnival 2019 to support the government’s efforts in promoting STEM across the country. This is in accordance to the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025 (PPPM 2013-2025) which emphasized STEM education at the school level.

Starting in 2012, PPST held the first ever Science Foundation UMS Open Day. This event acts as a medium of promoting Science Foundation programme especially to the current SPM students through Academic Talk. Apart from that, activities such as Science Exhibition, Science Labs Tour and Academic Exhibition were conducted to provide a comprehensive exposure to STEM especially for foundation students. Meanwhile, the Young Scientist Sci-show Competition (YSSC) and the Spelling Bee Competition (SBC) were introduced at the UMS Foundation Open Day 2018. YSSC is short video competition based on STEM and open to secondary school students in the Science stream.

Science Foundation UMS STEM Carnival 2019 is a continuation of the UMS Science Foundation Open Day. The rebranding of the event was accordance with the country's demand for STEM awareness especially for the younger generation. This time, PPST added the STEM Exhibition to attract more students. In addition, the competition of Junior Innovator Competition, first opened its participation to students from form 1 to 3, along with YSCC which is still ongoing this year.

A total of 639 visitors flooded the carnival area to enliven this open day celebration. PPST highly expects to contribute to the increasing number of students who will continue to study in science field later.
