Park Jung-heun and Jung Tae-gon Young Scholar Award
Park Jung-heun fund was established to provide financial travel assistance for two young Asian psychologists to attend the Biennial Conference of the Asian Association of Social Psychology (AASP). This fund is established based on Mr. Park’s commitment to education. He devoted his life to provide the best possible education for his children and those living in the community. Although he only received elementary education, he felt that education provides best way to acquire knowledge, moral character, and to ensure a high quality of life. Although he was born in Pyongyang, his mother directed him and his brothers to flee to Daegu during the Korean War. Being their parents, without any money and knowing no one, he started out as a day laborer. He works hard and saved enough money to start a small farm, which he later managed to develop it into an orchard.
Mr. Park represents a typical Korean who values education and who is willing to devote his life and sacrifice for his children so that they could obtain the best possible education. He extended his benevolence to numerous financially destitute students by providing them scholarships to complete their education. He also participated in community development and supporting schools. Such individuals are collectively responsible for the high levels of academic achievement, economic development, and standard of living that Koreans now enjoy. He felt a responsibility to go beyond the borders and share his value for educations by support young scholars in Asia.
The first Park Jung-heun Young Scholar Award was presented to Sylvia Xiaohua Chen, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Tasuku Igarashi, Nagoya University, Japan for excellence in research. The award was presented during the Sixth AASP Conference in Wellington, New Zealand, April 2-5, 2005.
Mr. Park decided to create another award to encourage young scholars from economically developing countries who may not have the necessary resources that students from economically developed countries possess.
