Encephalitis is a serious infection of the brain which largely affects children. It is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It causes high rates of illness in industrialized countries and has a case fatality rate up to 12%. However, the situation is largely unknown in the developing countries. Due to lack of improved diagnostic methods, the causes of encephalitis remains unknown in many cases.
Medical imaging technology is now an indispensable tool in the medical decision making process. The need for a rapid imaging assessment of a patient is most acutely felt in the pediatric population, where a swift clinical management of the patient can often dramatically influence a patient’s outcome. Thus a sound understanding of basic imaging investigations is necessary for the successful management of patients.
BACKGROUND Universiti Malaysia Sabah is striving for excellence through its innovative learning teaching programmes. The School of Medicine, under the auspices of UMS has launched a co-curricular programme with special emphasis on early exposure to rural communities of Sabah since 2003 which is aimed to be improving rural health and reducing inequalities of health in Sabah for 2 credits value .
