Intoduction

Praise be to Allah S.W.T. for His blessings in giving me the opportunity to perform my duty as the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), a university which is well-known for its aesthetic values and is considered as one of the prominent landmarks in Kota Kinabalu. Located amid crystal clear water of the South China Sea and lush greeneries, UMS is seen as a majestic palace of knowledge.

Experience in 2008

Ever since I was appointed as the Vice Chancellor in July 2008, various challenges were dealt with undivided support from everyone. We worked hard to perform our responsibilities in disseminating knowledge and creating conducive learning environment for students. Hence, in addition to strengthening academic and co-curricular activities and community services, activities promoting a positive outlook and health were encouraged.

Challenges Of 2009/1430 Hijrah

The year 2009/1430 Hijrah has just begun. Impending challenges are looming and they are inevitable but with fourteen years of experience, surely we are fully equipped to face them. We need to continuously increase our level of commitment to spearhead UMS to a higher level. The beginning of the new year should set us in motion to think and reflect on our achievements. Are we going to strive to achieve more success, or be complacent? Would the economic situation, social and world politics be better or worse?

Spearheading Excellence

The vision, mission, goals and various formulated strategies serve as our main platform in bringing glory to UMS. We must ensure that our organisation reaches its’ fullest potential and is fully developed in every aspect. For that, the aspects of quality and integrity shall be the pillars in the administration of all Departments, Schools, Centres, Institutes and Units in UMS. At the same time, working cultures which would improve work performance such as the “5S” concept and other activities promoting positive attitude and health will be continually implemented by the university. By doing so, every UMS staff will acquire a better understanding of the UMS motto that is “Strive to Excel”, which is the basis of our work culture. To spearhead excellence, we will adopt comprehensive, realistic, clear and proactive approaches.

United Minds, Coordinated Actions

Everyone has his/her own style and ways in responding to situations. Culture has influenced us to differ in our actions where every act stems from our different mode of thinking. However, if we start off from the same mindset, we will then be able to unite in our actions. In other words, if we share a similar policy and belief, we will be able to generate great and meaningful achievements. A shift in thinking should take place in order to excel. Our minds should be in unison to reflect the actual ability of our organisation.

The Responsibility Of Government Staff

Apart from being the Vice Chancellor, I am also a government staff bearing responsibilities for the rakyat or people. This post is an amanah or trust from the people, and it is my responsibility to deliver my very best. You, too, carry similar responsibilities. The only difference in our roles is the extent of our commitments in delivering the tasks shouldered upon us.

Closure

The world today is very unpredictable; be it in the field of economy, social or international politics. Therefore, we need to practise few basic approaches which could enable us to deal with future challenges. “Spend wisely and be cautious, be knowledgeable and informative and be a devoted and practising believer”. Insya’Allah, we will succeed.

Thank you.
