Introduction to HSK examination
HSK (Level I) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level I of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the A1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level I) can understand and use very simple Chinese phrases, meet basic needs for communication and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies.
I. Test Target
The HSK (Level I) is intended for students who have studied Chinese for a semester (half an academic year), with 2-3 class hours in each week. These students have mastered 150 commonly used words and basic grammar patterns.
II. Test Content
HSK (Level I) test is made up of listening comprehension and reading comprehension sections and contains a total of 40 items.
The test will last for 40 minutes in total (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).
1. Listening Comprehension
• There are 5 items in Part I. The recording of each item will be played twice. A phrase and picture will be provided with each item. The test takers should make a true-or-false judgment based on what they hear.
• There are 5 items in Part II. The recording of each item will be played twice. A sentence and 3 pictures will be provided with each item. The test takers should choose corresponding pictures based on what they hear.
• There are 5 items in Part III. The recording of each item will be played twice. A dialogue and several pictures will be provided with each item. The test takers should choose corresponding pictures based on what they hear.
• There are 5 items in Part IV. The recording of each item will be played twice. For each item, a person will make a statement. Another person will then ask a question and provide three possible answers. The three possible answers will be listed on the test paper, and test takers can choose one of the answers based on what they hear.
2. Reading Comprehension
• There are 5 items in Part I. Each item will provide a picture and a phrase. The test taker should judge whether or not they are consistent with each other.
• There are 5 items in Part II. The test paper will display several pictures. For each item, a sentence will be provided. The test taker needs to choose one of the corresponding pictures based on the content of the sentence.
• There are 5 items in Part III. During this section, 5 questions and 5 answers will be provided. The test take should match the question with the appropriate answer.
• There are 5 items in Part IV. Each item will display a sentence with one word missing. The test taker should select one of the words in the answer section to fill in the blank.
All items on the test paper are shown in pinyin.
III. Results Certificate
For the HSK (Level I), three results will be provided including listening, reading and total. The test taker must score at least 120 points total to be considered passing.
As a Chinese language certificate for foreign students’ entry into Chinese colleges, the results of the HSK are valid for two years (beginning from the test date).
The HSK (Level II) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level II of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the A2 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level II) have an excellent grasp of basic Chinese and can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
I. Test Target
The HSK (Level II) is intended for students who have studied Chinese for two semesters (an academic year), with 2-3 class hours in each week. These students have mastered 300 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.
II. Test Content
The HSK (Level II) test is made up of listening comprehension and reading comprehension sections and contains a total of 60 items.
The test will last for a total of 55 minutes (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).
1. Listening Comprehension
• There are 10 items in Part I. The recording of each item will be played twice. A sentence and a picture will be provided with each item. The test takers should make a true-or-false judgment based on what they hear.
• There are 10 items in Part II. The recording of each item will be played twice. For each item, a dialogue and several pictures will be provided. The test takers should select the appropriate answer based on what they hear.
• There are 10 items in Part III. The recording of each item will be played twice. Each item consists of a dialogue between two persons with a third person asking a question related to the content. There will be three possible answers on the test paper from which the test takers can select the correct one based on the passage.
• There are 5 items in Part IV. The recording of each item will be played twice. Each item consists of a 4-5 sentence dialogue between two persons with a third person will asking a question at the end of the passage. There will be three possible answers on the test paper from which the test takers can select the correct one based on what they hear in the passage.
2. Reading Comprehension
• There are 5 items in Part I. Several pictures will be shown on the test paper. For each item, a sentence will be provided. The test taker should choose corresponding pictures based on the sentence.
• There are 5 items in Part II. For each item, one or two sentences will be provided in which one word is missing. The test taker should select one of the words in the answer section to fill in the blank.
• There are 5 items in Part III. For each item, two sentences will be provided. The test taker should judge whether or not the second sentence is consistent with the first one.
• There are 10 items in Part IV. In this section, 20 sentences will be provided. The test taker will be asked to find the correlations between the sentences.
All the items on the test paper are shown in pinyin.
III. Results Certificate
For the HSK (Level II), three results will be provided including listening, reading and total. The test taker must score at least 120 points total to be considered passing.

The HSK (Level III) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level III of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the B1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level III) can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. They can manage most communication in Chinese when travelling in China.
I. Test Target
The HSK (Level III) is intended for students who have mastered 600 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.
II. Test Content
The HSK (Level III) test is made up of listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing sections and contains a total of 80 items.
The test will last for 90 minutes in total (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).
1. Listening Comprehension
• There are 10 items in Part I. The recording of each item will be played twice. For each item, a dialogue and several pictures will be provided. The test takers should select corresponding pictures based on what they hear.
• There are 10 items in Part II. The recording of each item will be played twice. For each item, a short passage will be read out, followed by an assertion, which also appears on the paper. The test taker should decide whether the assertion made is true or false.
• There are 10 items in Part III. The recording of each item will be played twice. Each item consists of a dialogue between two persons. A third person will then ask a question about the dialogue. There will be three possible answers on the test paper, from which the test takers can select the best answer based on what they hear.
• There are 10 items in Part IV. The recording of each item will be played twice. Each item consists of a 4-5 sentence dialogue between two persons. A third person will then ask a question based on the dialogue. There will be three possible answers on the test paper, from which the test takers can choose best answer based on what they hear.
2. Reading Comprehension
• There are 10 items in Part I. In this section, 20 sentences will be provided and the test taker will be asked to correlate them.
• There are 10 items in Part II. For each item, one or two sentences will be provided, in which one word/phrase is missing. The test taker should choose one of the suggested words/phrases to fill in the blank.
• There are 10 items in Part III. This part consists of 10 short passages, each followed by a question. The test taker should choose the best answer from the 3 choices provided.
3. Writing
• There are 5 items in Part I. Each item lists several words. The test taker should construct a sentence using the words provided.
• There are 5 items in Part II. Each item provides a sentence with several blanks. The test taker should fill in the blanks with the appropriate characters.
III. Results Certificate
For the HSK (Level III), four results will be provided including listening, reading, writing and the total. The test taker must score at least 180 points to be considered passing.
As a Chinese language certificate for foreign students’ entry into Chinese colleges, the results of the HSK are valid for two years (beginning from the test date).
The HSK (Level IV) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level IV of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the B2 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level IV) can converse in Chinese on a wide range of topics and are able to communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers.
I. Test Target
The HSK (Level IV) is intended for students who have studied Chinese2-4 class hours per week for four semesters (two academic years). These students have mastered 1,200 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.
II. Test Content
The HSK (Level IV) test is made up of listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing and contains a total of 100 test items.
The test will last for 105 minutes in total (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).
1. Listening Comprehension
• There are 10 items in Part I. The recording of each item will be played only once. For each item, a short passage will read out, followed by an assertion which also appears on the test paper. The test taker should decide whether the assertion is true or false.
• There are 15 items in Part II. The recording of each item will be played only once. Each item consists of a dialogue between two persons. A third person will then ask a question based on the dialogue. There will be four possible answers on the test paper, from which test takers can choose the right one based on what they hear.
• There are 20 items in Part III. The recording of each item will be played only once. This section consists of a 4-5 sentence dialogue or monologue followed by one or two questions. Four possible answers will be provided on the test paper, from which the test taker can choose the best one.
2. Reading Comprehension
• There are 10 items in Part I. One or two sentences will be provided for each item, in which one word/phrase is missing. The test taker should choose one of the suggested words/phrases to fill in the blank.
• There are 10 items in Part II. Each item consists of three sentences that the test taker needs to arrange in the correct order.
• There are 20 items in Part III. Each item consists of a short passage, and one or two questions will be asked about the passage. The test taker needs to select the best answer out of the four answers provided.
3. Writing
• There are 10 items in Part I. Each item consists of several words. The test taker should construct a sentence using these words.
• There are 5 items in Part II. Each item consists of a picture and a word. The test taker needs to write a sentence based on the picture and the word.
III. Results Certificate
For the HSK (Level III), four results will be provided including listening, reading, writing and the total. The test taker must score at least 180 points to be considered passing.

The HSK (Level V) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level V of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the C1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level V) can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese films and plays and give a full-length speech in Chinese.
I. Test Target
The HSK (Level V) is intended for students who have studied Chinese 2-4 class hours per week for more than two academic years. These students have mastered 2,500 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.
II. Test Content
The HSK (Level V) test is made up of listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing sections and contains a total of 100 items.
The test will last for 125 minutes in total (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).
1. Listening Comprehension
• There are 20 items in Part I. The recording of each item will be played only once. Each item consists of a dialogue between two persons, with a third person then asking a question about the dialogue. There will be four possible answers provided on the test paper. Test takers must choose the best answer based on what they hear.
• There are 25 items in Part II. The recording of each item will be played only once. This section consists of a 4-5 sentence dialogue or monologue followed by one or more questions. Four possible answers will be provided on the test paper. The test take must choose the best answer out of the four.
2. Reading Comprehension
• There are 15 items in Part I. This section consists of various passages, each with several blanks, which should be filled with a word or sentence. The test taker needs to choose the best answer out of four possible answers.
• There are 10 items in Part II. Each item consists of a passage and four possible answers. The test taker needs to choose which of the four answers is most consistent with the passage.
• There are 20 items in Part III. This section consists of several passages followed by some questions. The test taker should choose the best answer out of the 4 answers provided.
3. Writing
• There are 8 items in Part I. Each item consists of several words from which the test taker should construct a sentence.
• There are 2 items in Part II. The first item consists of several words and requires the test taker to write an article about 80 characters long using the words provided. The second item consists of a picture and requires the test taker to write an article about 80 characters long based on the picture.
III. Results Certificate
For the HSK (Level III), four results will be provided including listening, reading, writing and the total.
As a Chinese language certificate for foreign students’ entry into Chinese colleges, the results of the HSK are valid for two years (beginning from the test date).
The HSK (Level VI) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level V of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the C2 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level VI) can easily comprehend written and spoken information in Chinese and can effectively express themselves in Chinese, both orally and on paper.
I. Test Target
HSK (Level VI) is intended for students who have mastered 5,000 or more commonly used words.
II. Test Content
The HSK (Level VI) test is made up of listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing sections and contains a total of 101 items.
The test will last for 140 minutes in total (including 5 minutes in which the test takers fill in personal information).
1. Listening Comprehension
• There are 15 items in Part I. The recording of each item will be played only once. For each item, a short passage will be read and 4 possible answers will be provided on the test paper. The test taker needs to choose the answer that is most consistent with the passage.
• There are 15 items in Part II. The recording of each item will be played only once. A recording of three interviews will be played followed by 5 questions. For each question, 4 possible answers will be provided, from which the test takers can choose the best answer based on what they hear in the passage.
• There are 20 items in Part III. The recording of each item will be played only once. Several passages will be read, each of them followed by some questions. For each question, 4 possible answers will be provided, from which the test takers can choose the best answer based on what they hear in the passage.
2. Reading Comprehension
• There are 10 items in Part I. Each item consists of 4 sentences. The test taker needs to choose the sentence that is grammatically incorrect.
• There are 10 items in Part II. Each item consists of a short passage with 3-5 blanks. The test taker needs to choose the best answer from 4 possible answers based on the context.
• There are 10 items in Part III. There are two passages, each with 5 blanks. The test taker needs to choose the best answer out of 5 sentences based on the context.
• There are 20 items in Part IV. This section consists of several passages followed by some questions. The test taker should choose the right answer from 4 possible answers.
3. Writing
The test taker will be required to read a narrative article of about 1,000 characters within 10 minutes, and then rewrite it into a shorter article of about 400 characters within 35 minutes. The test taker should also create a title for the article. The test taker should recount the article and is not required to express personal opinions.
III. Results Certificate
For the HSK (Level III), four results will be provided including listening, reading, writing and the total.

HSK EXAMINATION
1.Test takers should reside in countries where on-site HSK, HSK Oral Test,YCT and BCT have not yet resumed.
2. Test takers must living in Malaysia currently.
3. Test takers should contact their local test center in the first instance in order to register for the test. Visit www.chinesetest.cn and click Global Test Centers to find your local center.
Requirements for test takers’ photo
Requirements for the photo are applicable mainly to HSK Levels 4-6, HSKK, BCT and YCT oral test, and the test score report for other levels does not carry a photo.
Preparation for the photo and its usage should meet the following requirements:
Format requirements for the photo:
- Test takers’ recent photo for identification (in a standard, two-inch form), and photos of daily life or landscape will not be accepted;
- No hat, scarf, headband or sunglasses are allowed to appear (except for special religious reasons);
- Both black-and-white and color photos are acceptable, and a white background is preferred.
To submit the photo, test takers may either log into the Chinese testing service website and upload the electronic photo in line with guidance from the website or bring the photo to teachers at the test center responsible for the registration and ask them to assist with the uploading.

Test admission ticket
Information on the test admission ticket includes test takers’ name, nationality, gender, type and number of the identity certificate, test subject, test time, test center, test location and test rules, etc.
After receiving the test admission ticket, test takers shall carefully check the accuracy of the information on it item by item. Such information as test takers’ name, gender, date of birth and identification number must be identical with that on his/her valid identity certificate; otherwise he/she will not be allowed to take the test.
If any incorrect information is found, please contact the test center to make appropriate modification; otherwise test takers’ test results will become invalid.
The test admission ticket is an important proof that test takers has got the admission to the test, and those who do not carry a test admission ticket will not be admitted to the test room to take the test. After the test, test takers shall still keep their test admission ticket, which will be required before the receipt of the score report. To view the test results online or enjoying such value-added service as applying for an additional score report, test takers also need to provide the number of his/her test admission ticket no.
How to change the test date
After the registration and payment, test takers can apply to change the test date within the stipulated time, but cannot cancel the registered test; neither can the registered test center nor test level be changed.
To change the test date, test takers need to log into the Chinese testing service website (www.chinesetest.cn) and enter the Personal Center to make an application. The new test date shall be one at the same level and test center in the same year.
Deadline and charges for changing the test date are as follows:
• Before the registration deadline (including the deadline): test takers can change the test date for free.
• Between the registration deadline and 10 days before the test (including the 10th day): test takers need to pay an amount equal to 30% of the test fee before they can apply for the change during this period.
• Within 10 days before the test (excluding the 10th day): No application for changes of this kind will be accepted.
For test takers to take the internet-based test, the valid period for changing the test date for free is 27 days before the test, and other relevant rules are the same with the paper-based test.
1. Articles Carried for the test
On the test date, test takers must bring the following articles to the test room:
- Test admission ticket;
- Identity certificate (copies are invalid) which is authentic, valid, identical with the registration information and carries a photo;
- 2B pencils (two or more) and eraser, in the event that it is a paper-based test.
Other personal articles of test takers cannot be carried with them during the test but shall be placed in the depository or place designated by the test examiner. Do not bring any valuables to the test room; otherwise no compensation will be made for the loss.
Test takers who are unable to present the valid identity certificate and test admission ticket will not be permitted to take the test, nor will the test fee be refunded.
2. Time of admission
Test takers shall arrive at the exam room half an hour before the start of the test, so as to avoid being late. After the admission, no test takers could allowed to leave the test room until the end of the Listening part.
Paper-based test: Before the start of the Listening part, late test takers can enter the test room and take the test; after the Listening part has started, late test takers have to wait till its end before entering the test room to work on the Reading part, with no extra time added to make up for the delay; after the start of the Reading part, late test takers are not allowed to enter the test room to take the test.
Oral test: Before the start of the recording, late test takers can enter the test room and take the test; but after the recording has started, late test takers are not allowed to enter the test room to take the test.
3. Test Methods
(1) Test takers shall take the test in line with the arrangements and instructions of the examiner(s).
(2) All the answers shall be provided by filling in the answer sheet with a 2B pencil.
(3) Answering of the oral test shall be in the form of live recording, and test takers shall complete the test with their own recording device separately in line with the instructions and arrangements by the examiner(s).
(4) The internet-based test is a paperless exam, which requires test takers to answer via mouse and keyboard, and the test duration is subject to automatic timing.
4. Test regulations
(1) Test takers must sit in the assigned seats and have no right to choose seats.
(2) Test takers must follow instructions of the examiner(s), observe the test rules, and independently complete various parts of the test.
(3) No break will be set during the test. If, due to any special reason, test takers need to leave the exam room halfway, he/she shall first obtain the consent of the examiner(s) and then submit his/her test admission certificate and identity certificate to the examiner(s) before leaving the exam room. After his/her return, the examiner(s) will give back the test admission ticket and identity certificate.
(4) In the oral test, no test takers shall temporarily leave the room. If any test takers has to leave, then the departure means to withdraw from the test.
5. Handling of emergencies
(1) In case of any unfair treatment of test takers due to mismanagement of the test room, such as insufficient test time and damage to the paper or test equipment, which makes test takers unable to complete the test, the Chinese Testing International will make timely arrangements for a new, free test for him/her, but it will not assume any indirect loss and the test site cannot be changed.
(2) In case of any force majeure, such as a natural disaster or accident, which makes test takers unable to complete the test, the Chinese Testing International will make timely arrangements for a new, free test for him/her or fully refund the test fee to him/her, but it will not assume any indirect loss
6. Absence from the test
If test takers fail to take the test on the test date due to certain reason that is not attributable to the test organizer, no test fee will be refunded.
7. Violations and penalties
Test takers shall not open the paper in advance or write down the answer out of the right answering area, neither shall they tear, replace, copy the paper, nor take the paper or the answer sheet outside the test room. In case of any of such acts as cheat, substitution of the test taker, plagiarism, smuggled material, or disobedience to instructions of the examiner(s), the test results will be canceled.
1.Score enquiry
One month after taking the test, test takers can log into the Chinese testing service website (www.chinesetest.cn) and enter his/her test admission ticket number as well as name to view the test scores.
2. Score report
Test taker registered in mainland China, please apply for delivery service of analysis report and score report online which could be sent to any designated address after the score issues(Apply for the Score Reports). As for the other countries and regions, the score report will be delivered to the test center within 1-2 months after the testing date, and test taker can go there for collecting by presenting his/her test admission ticket and valid identification documents.
3. Validity period of score report
The test result is a long term available, but the score report to be used for the application to Chinese universities and colleges is valid within two years (from the test date).

For the purpose of helping test takers present their score reports of the Chinese test as a proof of their Chinese proficiency for college application, graduation, recruitment, promotion, etc., it’s available for test takers to apply for the delivery of an additional score reports via the Chinese testing service website (www.chinesetest.cn). 2. Modification of the score report
The HSK score report serves as an important proof of test takers’ Chinese proficiency. In view that some test takers may fail to carefully check the information as required during their registration online or at the test center or fail to carefully check the registration confirmation or the test admission ticket after the completion of the test registration, which may lead to discrepancy between the personal information on the score report and the real information, the Chinese testing service website (www.chinesetest.cn), in order to ensure the normal use of the report, allows test takers to apply for the modification of the score report.
Requirements for test takers’ application to modify the score report:
(1) An application to modify the information is limited to the following situations:
• Misspelling of the name
• Error of the nationality information
• Error of the gender information
(2) Test takers must provide the relevant supporting certificates, such as his/her passport and identity card.
(3) The application shall be filed within the validity period of the test results report (i.e., within two years after the end of the test).

What are the differences between paper-based test and HSK iBT?
The only difference between paper-based test and IBT test is: For paper-based test you are answering with 2B pencils and answer sheets, while the HSK iBT(at center), you would complete the test using a computer at a specific test center. And the HSK iBT(at home), you would complete the test at home(public areas are not allowed) with required computer/laptop and devices.
Paper-based test and iBT(at center), candidates should attend the test at specific test centers.
How to register the HSK and HSKK?
Online registration process for Chinese tests are showed as follow:
1. Log into the website( www.chinesetest.cn)
2. Signing up. Please provide necessary personal information including e-mail address, nationality, mother language, birth date and so on.
3. Test registration. Please select test center and date, complete your personal information , upload ID photo and finally confirm your registration information.
4. Fulfill the payment. For paper-based Test, payment should be fulfilled at least 27 days ahead of the test date, for IBT payment should be fulfilled at least 10 days before the test; otherwise the test registration will not be valid.
5. Registration completed.

After the completion of registration, can I change the test center?
If the test fee has not been paid, you can cancel your registration before its deadline and re-register for a new test center. If the payment has been completed, you cannot change the test center.
When and where can I collect my certificate?
Test taker registered in mainland China, please apply for delivery service of analysis report and score report online which could be sent to any designated address after the score issues(Apply for the Score Reports).
As for the other Countries and regions, the score report will be delivered to the test center within 1-2 months after the testing date, and test taker can go there for collecting by presenting his/her test admission ticket and valid identification documents.

After the completion of registration, can I change the test date?
After the registration and payment, test takers can apply to change the test date within the stipulated time, but cannot cancel the registered test; neither can the registered test center nor test level be changed.
To change the test date, test takers need to log into the Chinese testing service website (www.chinesetest.cn) and enter the Personal Center to make an application. The new test date shall be one at the same level and test center in the same year.
Deadline and charges for changing the test date are as follows:
• 27 days before the test (including the 27th day): test takers can change the test date for free.
• After 27 days but 10 days before the test (including the 10th day): test takers need to pay an amount equal to 30% of the test fee before they can apply for the change during this period.
• Within 10 days before the test (excluding the 10th day): No application for changes of this kind will be accepted.
For test takers to take the internet-based test, the valid period for changing the test date for free is 27 days before the test, and other relevant rules are the same with the paper-based test.
Date changing can be applied ONCE for each registration.
How to handle a username error or password loss?
Please input your email address in the username field. If you lost your password, use the "Find Password" function, and receive the mail for password recovery sent to your registered email address.
How much is charged for taking HSK?
Due to different exchange rates in various countries or regions, the registration fee for HSK differs. For details, please contact the testing center.
Is an online HSK test available?
HSK is held in two forms: internet-based test and paper-based test. You need to register for a network-based test at a testing center that provides computer network-based test service. The computer network-based test shall be completed under the supervision of invigilators, the same as the paper-based test.
After the completion of registration, can I change the test level?
If the test fee has not been paid, you can cancel your registration before its deadline and re-apply for a new level. If the payment has been completed, you cannot change the test level.
How can I change my personal information that is found to be incorrect after I’ve received the report of test score?
If you, after receiving the report of test score, find such information as your name, nationality and gender is incorrect, you can log in the HSK test service website, www.chinesetest.cn, opt to apply for duplicates of the HSK score report on the “Personal Center" page, edit the item(s) that needs to be modified, and upload a copy of your relevant identification (passport or identity card). After the modification has passed the review by the CTI, you need to pay a certain fee before the CTI sends a remade test score report to your designated address.
