Talk title: How do Energy Savings and Tree Planting Correlate
On August 9, 2024, The Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS); through its Civil Engineering Club organized the Environmental Awareness talk session which was delivered by Ts. Dr. Siti Birkha binti Mohd Ali from Universiti Selangor (UNISEL). She is one of the IET Malaysia Local Network (LN) committee 2023/2025. The talk aimed to provide insight into the environmental impact of energy savings, namely electricity consumption in buildings. During the sharing session, the correlation between energy savings in kilowatt-hours (kWh), energy consumption costs (RM), and carbon emissions (CO2) was demonstrated.

The speaker presented her speech on this interesting topic.
The talk includes the presentation and the Q&A session. The content of the one (1) hour presentation emphasizes the Energy Saving Pyramid which consists of Energy Conservation, Energy Efficiency (EE), and Renewable Energy. It showcases numerous methods of achieving energy saving and could be selected based on one’s capability, budget, and preferences. Examples for each method are well explained. The outcome of the case study conducted in the Wisma R&D, Universiti Malaya’s building was presented during the session. It acts as an eye-opener to the audiences which consist of the UMS and UTHM management, academicians, and students. The sharing session also highlighted the tools that were used to measure the carbon emission from the energy consumption from the reference buildings as well as the number of trees to offset the amount released.
The study emphasized the need to demonstrate how energy efficiency measures implemented on buildings might benefit the environment. The presentation demonstrated that, in addition to highlighting the environmental impact through the amount of carbon (CO2) emissions, the number of trees required to offset the carbon emissions could help motivate more building owners, particularly non-technical management and staff, to initiate energy sustainability programs in the future.
