The Department of Community and Family Medicine (CFM) is one of the ten departments in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) and is located at Block E of the main campus.

The department occupies the whole three stories building on the eastern part of the building.  The ground and the first floors are allocated for Public Health Laboratories used for teaching purposes in the field of public health nutrition, environmental health, occupational health, smoking health research and for child psychology and psychiatric assessment. At the northern part of the first floor, special area for Post Graduate Study is being renovated to accommodate a lecture rooms for Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor in Public Health (DrPH).

The lecturers room are located in the whole second and third floor of this building.

This department is made up of a few specialities such as Public Health, Occupational health, Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology.

This department is one of the biggest departments in the Faculty and is taking major leadership role in the community engagement and medical and health education program.

Since the establishment in 2003, this department has expanded tremendously in term of academic program. In the year 2014, the first full time MPH program was launched with five full time candidates. All of the four candidates managed to graduate on time (except for one international candidate who dropped out from the program in the first semester due to financial issue). The MPH program has received its full time accreditation in 2017 from MQA Malaysia for five years. In 2018, the MPH program also got the accreditation from APACPH Accreditation Board. Thus, making this faculty as the second university with MPH accredited by APACPH in Malaysia.(beside University Malaya). Presently, the department is running the fourth cohort of MPH program and has produced thirty (30) MPH graduates in Sabah.

In 2018, the department launched the first DrPH program with seven candidates. Both of these MPH and DrPH programs are recognised by the Conjoined Board of Public Health Malaysia.

The department is also planning to introduce a few new programs in future which will include Master Science in Public Health (MScPH) in the field of Public Health Administration, Environment and Occupational Health.

In term of manpower strength, the department has 12 Public Health lecturers, 4 Medical Psychiatry, 1 Psychology, 1 laboratory assistant and 1 administrative clerk. A few more training lecturers are on their study leaves to be trained in various specialities and will be back to strengthen the department in 3 to 5 years’ time.
