AQUACULTURE INCUBATOR CELL

AQUACULTURE INCUBATOR CELL

Interest in aquaculture is growing in Malaysia. Seafood consumption in the country is among the highest in south-east Asia. While capture fisheries are declining, aquaculture is seeking to bridge the gap between supply and demand. To expand its role as a dependable supplier of seafood, the aquaculture industry should overcome the constraints hindering its growth and, if required, change course for reasons of sustainability and economic viability.

The finfish and shrimp hatcheries of Borneo Marine Research Institute have developed capabilities for captive breeding and seed production, and are in a position to provide spin-off benefits of their expertise and infrastructure through an ‘Aquaculture Incubator Cell’. This Cell will start operating from 01 January 2014. Consistent with the strategies identified under the HICoE roadmap, the Institute has set up an aquaculture incubator cell with effect from 01 January 2014.

Objectives

1.     To nurture links with the industry and help in jointly pursuing feasibility studies required for developing a commercial-scale aquaculture enterprises, especially for sustainable seed production.

2.     To develop a knowledge management system based on demonstrated strengths of aquaculture staff and hatcheries that could facilitate transitioning of on-going research into prototypes and prototypes into commercial-scale ventures.

3.     To offer technical advice and support to unemployed graduates seeking self-employment or other sections of the society willing to take their first step to set up an aquaculture or allied company or more established aquaculture-related enterprises willing to diversify their commercial products or services, or address the problems constraining their growth and commercial viability.

4.     To assist the coastal communities in their plans for improving aquatic food production systems through reseeding and other appropriate programs.
