ICMC PRE-WORKSHOP ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, COMMERCIALISATION, AND CONSULTATION POLICIES

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has organized a two-day pre-workshop on intellectual property, commercialization, and consultation policies from 27th-28th of February 2023 at Bilik Pembangunan Bakat, Bangunan Canselori, UMS.

The program was organized by the Innovation and Commercialisation Management Centre (ICMC) to refine policies to support the university's strategy of increasing the protection of intellectual property, commercialization, and consulting. These efforts will contribute to the university in terms of income generation.

The program was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Ir. Dr. Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly, who delivered a speech highlighting the importance of these policies to achieve the university's vision and mission. He emphasized the need to create a conducive environment for research and development to flourish, leading to the creation of new knowledge and innovations that can benefit society.

The program was a hybrid event that was attended by various esteemed guests, including Mr. Awang Suhaizam Bungso (UMS Legal Officer), Prof. Dr. Jumat Sulaiman (Director of RMC), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatimah Ahmedy (Deputy Director (Strategic) of RMC), Dr. Borhan Abdullah (Director of CIEW), Dr. Nur Thara Atikah Zainal (Deputy Director of PKPKP), Mr. Darwis Manainus Awang Kangit (the Head of BPPI), Mr. Francis Vincent Ariffin JNR (the Group Manager (Business Operation) / Acting Head of Company UMS Investment Holdings Sdn. Bhd.) and Mrs. Nerwani Shereen (the Director (Marketing and Business Development) UMS Investment Holdings Sdn. Bhd.)

The pre-workshop is expected to have a significant impact on UMS's future financial performance by increasing the university's income generation through commercializing research and promoting spin-off companies. The policy refinement workshop is a testament to UMS's commitment to enhancing its research and innovation capabilities and contributing to the country's economic development.
