Karnival MegaTUESDAY, 28 APRIL – The Psychology, Education and Sports Students Association (PERMAPPS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised the Faculty of Psychology and Education Session 2014/2015 Mega Carnival.

Deputy Dean (Student Affairs and Alumni) Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Associate Professor Dr. Suyansah Swanto said the programme aimed to foster closer ties with the faculty staff and students besides improving soft skills of students through activities.

“In addition to giving students the opportunity to engage directly in the organising of the programme, this carnival is a benchmark for the faculty itself in organising this carnival that brings together all faculty members in a variety of activities,” he said when launching the programme.

He added, the three-day programme, which was attended by about 200 students would hopefully be continued to form cooperation between staff and students in organising such event.

Among the activities held during the carnival included Poetry Festival, Coffee Talk Debate, book fair, health fair and funfair. – (fl)

banner apk12sTUESDAY, 28 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising the 12th Fundamental Entrepreneurship Acculturation Expo (APK) starting 5 to 8 May 2015.

According to the Group Managing Director of APK, Ta Honn Yu, the expo themed ‘Inspiration. Idea. Innovation’ was intended to encourage people especially students to create new and creative ideas from their surroundings that would bring innovation to everyday life.

“This course is able to deliver a wide range of entrepreneurship ideas to students because entrepreneurial activity contributes towards the economy and can develop a competitive community,” he explained.

The Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) UMS expo organised by the students saw a total of 128 booths participating in this four-day programme, held at UMS Library parking square starting from 8.00 am to 9.00 pm.

Among the booths at the expo are food, drinks, games and health screenings besides stalls selling products inspired and innovated by UMS students, which is expected to be the main focus of the APK Expo.

The public, especially UMS students and surrounding community in Kota Kinabalu are invited to the expo, thus encouraging students in their entrepreneurial ventures. - (fl)

sukanun 2015MONDAY, 27 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) contingent is ready to face the challenges ahead at the Statutory Bodies Sports Championship (SUKANUN) 2015 which will be held from 28 April to 3 May.

UMS Acting Registrar, No’man Hj Ahmad who is Head of Contingent said, a total of 158 athletes representing UMS were ready to give a stiff fight in all events participated.

“UMS Contingent this time is sending a large number of athletes to participate in 13 events contested since the championship is held in Sabah,” he said.

He was speaking at the handing-over of UMS flag ceremony to the contingent held at UMS Gallery this morning.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah reminded all athletes who were competing to demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship and practice a high discipline while representing UMS in the championship.

“Whilst taking part in sports, use this opportunity to make friends with each other and strengthen the friendship between athletes from various statutory bodies throughout the country.

“We hope the athletes will compete to their best and to show a good performance to bring glory to UMS nationally,” he said.

SUKANUN 2015 saw Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah Branch selected to host the championship, and some of the events will be contested in several places around Kota Kinabalu. – MA (fl)

mesyuarat jakimTUESDAY, 28 APRIL – The Islamic Centre of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is ready to work with various parties including the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM) to disseminate information particularly issues related to the teachings of Islam.

This include the organising of special talks, preparation of Friday sermon texts at UMS mosque and programmes on awareness towards the love of religion and nation as well as living harmoniously among the multiracial society of Malaysia.

This was stated in a statement by the representative of UMS Islamic Centre at a meeting between JAKIM Directors and Directors of Islamic Centres of Public Universities and Institutions of Higher Learning, at the Executive Board Room, UMS recently.

The meeting among others touched on the cooperation between JAKIM and the Islamic Centres of universities in Malaysia in providing clear explanations on Jihad and the Malaysian Syariah Index.

The meeting chaired by the Deputy Director (Human Development) JAKIM, Dato’ Haji Razali Shahabudin, also recommended that the Islamic Centre of each university coordinate with the relevant agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), National Security Council (MKN) and others pertaining to the organising of information programmes on issues such as the misconceptions on Jihad which was increasingly worrying of late. – (fl)

Koir 2015MONDAY, 27 APRIL – The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will organise a Workshop and Choir Concert UMS in Sabah on 29 and 30 April.

According to the Head of Music Programme, FKSW, Resot Igau, this is one of FKSW’s programme organised annually to integrate UMS music students, choir coaches and music teachers from secondary schools, government sector and music associations in this state.

“The workshop will be conducted by music experts from Japan, Dr. Masashi Kishimoto and local musician, Mak Chie Hoe who will share new techniques to improve the quality of choir,” he said.

The two-day programme aimed to provide intensive and quality training to all choir coaches who can contribute to the development of the music and choir industry in Sabah.

Meanwhile, Programme Coordinator, Adsone Matthew Mitty Gabu said the workshop was expected to produce young people who appreciate universal art and music.

The highlight of the programme will be held on 30 April with vocal concert performance from workshop participants and a special appearance by In Unity Chorale and The Saints groups.

The concert will commence at 8.00 pm at the Recital Hall UMS. – ZMD (fl)
