The purpose of the Museum’s establishment is reflected through the modest but invaluable collection of exhibits and artifacts that hold valuable history and are symbolic to UMS. It is a portrayal of the efforts, contributions and sacrifices made throughout the years by various authorities and individuals towards the development of the University since its establishment on 24th November 1994. Apart from charting the decade-long achievements of the University, the Museum serves to instill a sense of belonging and pride, not only amongst the campus community, but also the people of Sabah and Malaysia as a whole. It was established to inspire and cultivate values of excellence for the intellectual, spiritual and emotional benefits of the future generation.

  AQUARIUM & MARINE MUSEUM

Located at a scenic seafront, the Aquarium and Marine Museum complex houses colourful and beautiful marine life. It is one of the key components of Marine BioValley of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) dedicated to inspiring ocean conservation through education, research, innovation and exploration. Learning about marine life is more interactive, interesting, and worth enjoying in a real-life situation. It instils a sense of respect towards marine environment and inculcates an understanding on the importance of marine environment for mankind. The display inside the aquarium section exhibits an ecosystem with its complex communities of organisms interacting in their environment that calls for a unique learning experience.  This excellent education tool helps develop an understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things and awareness that the sea is an integral part of our existence, needing protection.

The atrium leads into a deep dive diorama that gives a visual sensation of being beneath the waves and at the sea floor.  Surrounded by rich marine biodiversity in an environment of dark deep-sea cave. Visitors experience a fascinating atmosphere in the aquarium when they are face to face with the ocean life and are entertained by the unique behaviour of living corals, clams, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, shrimp, fish and turtle among other groups.  This produces admiration and a passionate love for marine life.

The museum section offers close viewing of the fossils of marine flora and fauna, including seaweeds, corals, turtles and marine mammals. A mangrove walk area reminds visitors of the need to conserve and rehabilitate this remarkable coastal vegetation.

Among the facilities and exhibition spaces available at AMUMS are:
