For Education and Research development to accomplish meaningful objectives, the research Unit Kajian Bahan dan Mineral - UKBM (Material & Mineral Research Unit – MMRU) was formally endorsed in the Board of Directors meeting of Universiti Malaysia Sabah – UMS (Mesyuarat Lembaga Pengarah UMS) on the 2nd December 2010. In part, it was also a pursuance to establish future Center of Excellence in research for Scientists, Engineers, and Technologist involving in materials and minerals development. Starting from ground zero, strategy was set to concurrently establish and perform in selective result oriented outcomes. Office set up, management, research, postgraduate, publication, international linkage, and intellectual properties at large were initiated. In fact, the earlier foundation of the current Unit was established as the Centre of Materials & Mineralsunder the Centre of Excellence development dates back to the University endorsement on the 15th of March 2006. The Centre then prided its establishment as a niche to fill the void in the Physical Science research area for the UMS. Today, the Unit’s effort strives with care to support and to ensure availability and sustainability of utilizing renewable and non-renewable materials. Through careful management of engineering and technological ingenuity, environmentally friendly approaches to cleaner production, minimization of waste, improved utilization, and recyclability of material becomes an important concept of our distinctive priority scientifically, economically and ecologically for our researchers to strive for.
