BENabm29.01.15THURSDAY, 29 JANUARY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah today urged all UMS staff to generate income for their departments to lower their dependency on government grants.

He said this at the opening of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah 2016-2017 Expenditure Management Workshop attended by more than 140 staff representing their departments responsible in expenditure management.

“As a public university, we always support the aspiration and mission of the Ministry of Education Malaysia, and the government in general. Thus, UMS emphasises on value for money expenditure as well as prudent spending,” he said.

He added that other steps taken to ensure prudent spending included the reduction of 34% for all official functions, conferences and seminars by optimising in-house facilities starting this year and a reduction of 5% on all food and drinks expenses.

He hoped that through this workshop, all spending could be properly planned and that an action plan schedule to curb excesses would be organised.

The function was also attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof; Head Librarian, Dyg Rukiah Ag Amit; Acting Registrar, No’man Hj. Ahmad and Acting Bursar, Zallifah Shadan. - FL
