FKSW Uncover Young Composers Talent

Gema CiptaFRIDAY, 17 OCTOBER – The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to uncover the talents of new composers and songwriters from among their music programme students in Sabah through the Gema Cipta Competition 2014.

The competition which was held in FKSW Dewan Resital (Recital Hall) recently saw 10 participants taking part comprising of students from UMS, Sabah Institute of Arts (SIA), Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR) and students from the Teachers Training Institute Kent College.

The first place of the Gema Cipta 2014 was won by SIA student, Erica Lee Siau Chee with her song entitled ‘Kaleidoscope’, composed by Eugene Tong How Cheng. They received cash prize of RM700, trophy and certificate of participation.

Second and third places went to UMS student, Muhammad Syuwari Sutrisno and Velary Vencent Tian Sim respectively earning them RM500 and RM300, a trophy and certificate each.

Another UMS student, Yong Shy Wee won the best performance category earning her a guitar and a trophy.

Dean of FKSW, Prof. Dato’ Hj Hamdan Hj Adnan said the competition acted as a platform in producing young and talented composers with quality in the music industry on par with international musicians.

“I am confident that this programme will also help students to hone their talents in creating and composing songs,” he said in his speech which was read by FKSW Deputy Dean (Academic and International), Suzalie Mohamad. – ZMD (fl)
