IOGSE 2013 Attracts More Than 100 Participants

IOGSEWEDNESDAY, 09 OCTOBER - Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with Material and Mineral Research Unit and the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SKTM) organised the inaugural International Oil and Gas Symposium & Exhibition (IOGSE) 2013.

The symposium which was held at Grand Ball Room 1 Borneo was officiated by the Dean of SKTM, Prof. Dr. Rosalam Sarbatly who represented UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.

In his speech, Datuk Dr. Harun said, the oil and gas resources must be utilised in a sustainable manner through careful management.

He said, research into new and environmentally friendly methods of cleaner production, minimisation of wastes, improved utilisation, and recyclability of wastes must be given distinctive priority scientifically, technologically, economically and ecologically.

“As Malaysia witnesses the growth of resource industry, the symposium is in line with the nation’s efforts to promote research and development in the oil and gas sector for the improvement of quality human life in medicine, food, agriculture science and environmental protection.

“This effort is very important, particularly to Sabah and Malaysia in general, because of the rapid industrialisation of the country.  We can give impetus to the oil and gas industry by using state of the art technologies, methodologies and techniques to realise Malaysia’s Vision 2020 as a developed nation,” Dr. Harun added.

With the theme ‘Current Global Technology Trends In the Oil and Gas Industry’, the purpose of IOGSE 2013 was to  contribute towards the sustainability of the growth of the Sabah oil and gas industry, and also to be a common platform where academia, policy makers and industry players can review and discuss on the strategies and potential ways to expedite the development of the oil and gas industry in Sabah.

The first such event in this country attracted more than 100 oil and gas participants to explore and discuss the contemporary global issues as well as showcasing its working papers.  Also present at the function was IOGSE  Organising Director, Prof. Dr. Duduku Krishnaiah.
