FRIDAY, 30 MAY – Entrepreneurial activity has long been known as a producer of wealth and could enhance the economic level of a country.

According to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah, when the economy improved the country would prosper, the government’s efforts in eradicating poverty would also be achieved.

“With this in mind, the government through the Ministry of Education (KPM), which was then known as the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) implemented the Higher Education Entrepreneurship Development Policy 2010.

“It aims to promote and strengthen a more organised and holistic entrepreneurship development among local universities (IPT) to produce quality human capital who can think, with attributes and with entrepreneurship values,” he said during the official closing ceremony of the Entrepreneurship Research Development and Entrepreneurship Centre (ERDEC) Carnival at Dewan Bankuasi UMS.

Datuk Dr. Harun said the implementation of the policy was also an effort to create more entrepreneurs who will act as catalysts to national economic transformation into a high income economy based on innovation to achieve a developed nation status by the year 2020.

“This policy is also strengthened with the launching of the IPT Strategic Entrepreneurship Plan is achieved,” he added.

Touching on the entrepreneurship carnival, he said it was very timely to attract students as well as exposing them to this field thus engaging themselves into having their own business after graduating.

Datuk Dr. Harun also declared 28 May as ‘UMS Entrepreneurship Day’ celebrated every year. – SS (fl)
