pensijilan oshmsTHURSDAY, 07 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Chancellery Department this morning received recognition on Occupational Health and Safety Management System Certification for the OHSAS 18001:2007 and MS1722:2011 in a ceremony held at the Gallery, UMS.

The scope of certification for the Chancellery Department included the Chancellery Office, Internal Audit, Islamic Centre UMS, Department of Information and Communication Technology, Occupational Health and Safety Centre and EcoCampus Management Centre.

The recognition of certification was presented by the Chairman of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Lee Lam Thye.

In his speech, he said he was impressed with UMS Occupational Safety and Health Policy that was committed to realise and cultivate safe working practices through compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

“The recognition of certification today clearly demonstrates the efforts of the employer, namely UMS in providing protection to its employees in terms of occupational safety and health to prevent accidents and injuries,” he explained.

He also hoped that the scope of this certification could be expanded to other departments and faculties within UMS campus.

“With this management system, the task of monitoring, measurement and verification of occupational safety and health performance can be implemented in a systematic and effective way,” he concluded. – MA (fl)

Naib Canselor UMS2THURSDAY, 07 MAY – The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah today said that UMS was still waiting for the official report from the police before any action could be taken against those involved in the 1 May anti-GST rally.

He said the university treat this matter seriously even though it happened outside the campus.

“However, at this point we leave it to the authorities to carry out further investigations,” he said, adding that there might be four to six students involved.

He was met after the OHSAS18001:2007O and MS 1722:2011 Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS) Certificate Handing Over Ceremony in conjunction with World OSH Day UMS level held at the Gallery, Chancellery Building. – SS (fl)

Ellron TUn LPU LadangWEDNESDAY, 06 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) planned to set up a farm that covers about 10,000 acres in the district of Keningau in future.

This was expressed by the Chairman of the Board of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Tun Zaki Tun Azmi to Sook Assemblyman, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin at a meeting in Keningau recently.

Tun Zaki said the establishment of the farm was needed for the benefit of the future generations through research and knowledge transfer relating to UMS students under the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture (FPL).

Meanwhile, Datuk Ellron welcomed the proposal which he deemed able to improve the agricultural industry in Keningau.

“I strongly welcome the proposal by UMS, more so when the people in Sook are mainly into agriculture. Thus, with the establishment of this farm would encourage them to adopt modern farming methods,” said Datuk Ellron, who is the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Sabah.

He also suggested to UMS to get the involvement of the local community in ensuring the success of the farm.

He said a joint-venture could also be achieved through the construction of a site farm on communal titles such as those already developed by some private parties before.

“For example, in Sook alone, more than 50,000 acres have been developed in collaboration with the private sector and community,” he added.

Earlier, Dean of FPL, Professor Dr. Wan Mohamad Wan Othman in his briefing said, the establishment of the farm would provide employment opportunities for the locals, became the major supplier of animal feeds besides being the catalyst to the development of the livestock industry chain in Sabah.

“It is also an effort to reduce imports of livestock feeds and another step for the university to generate financial resources for the benefit of the young generation studying in UMS. More importantly, the said farm would provide the platform for practical training to the students to practice their knowledge and skills learned after they graduate,” he further added.

Also present were the Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation), Dr. Jupikely James Silip and representatives from related government departments and agencies. – SS (fl)

Lawatan KKTF UMTHURSDAY, 07 MAY – Tun Fuad Residential College (KKTF) through the Housing and Hospitality Student Affairs Department (HEP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) welcomed visitors from Universiti Malaya (UM) First Residential College delegation, recently.

The delegation comprised 19 members headed by their Principal, Dr. Firdaus Hariri.

The delegation’s arrival was warmly welcomed by KKTF Principal, Dr. Puteri Hayati Megat Ahmad and the management and fellow at the Seminar Room, Multipurpose Hall KKTF.

The delegation was briefed on the management of the residential colleges at UMS by HEP Senior Dormitory Assistant Manager, Sudirman Laruju.

During the visit, an information sharing session by the members was also held between the two entities before the guests were brought around KKTF.

SMK Tawau - KALWEDNESDAY, 06 MAY – A total of 38 Tawau Secondary School (SMK) students recently organised a study visit to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (KAL).

The group leader, Haji Rafi Sabaktullah said the visit was intended as a benchmark for SMK Tawau Disciplinary body.

Haji Rafi, the Senior Assistant for Student Affairs stressed that the visit to UMSKAL was an encouragement for their students to work harder before stepping into the ivory tower.

The students were welcomed by UMSKAL Assistant Registrar of Student Affairs, Mas Adi Alimin.

He was representing UMSKAL Director, Associate Professor Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik then said that the visit would hopefully strengthen the cooperation in various fields including academic and co-curricular activities.

He extended an invitation to the students and teachers of SMK Tawau to UMSKAL again for future visits.- SS (fl)
