PMR MAPIMMONDAY, 10 FEBRUARYEducation, knowledge and skills play an important role in determining our future direction.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah said the three basic elements should be in every student so as to be competent when they enter the working world.

“Set your target, focus on your goal, keep the momentum of your excellent achievement,” he said at the Outstanding Student Awards Ceremony 2013 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Damit, Tamparuli, a school under the Malaysian Academic Publishing Council (MAPIM). His speech was read by the Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Prof. Dato’ Mohd Hamdan Hj Adnan.

Datuk Harun added that outstanding students were nurtured through the support and motivation encouraged by both parents who always strive to provide financial assistance and materials for school.

“Their sacrifices cannot be compensated by the children in monetary value, but enough by achieving excellence in education and a better life of their own. These are more meaningful for the parents,” he said.

He also reminded students to appreciate the sacrifices made by their teachers who were dedicated in educating and ensuring success for their students.

The event which was jointly organised by UMS Publishing Unit saw a total of 45 outstanding students from St. Michael, Penampang; SMK Sungai Damit, Tamparuli and SMK Bundu Tuhan, Ranau received their awards.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Local Government and Housing Sabah, Datuk Hj. Hajiji Mohd. Noor.

Also present were the District Education Officer, Tah Niah Hj. Jaman; Tamparuli People Development Leader, Datuk Jahid Jahim; Head of UMS Publishing Unit , Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asmady Idris; Deputy Director of UTM Press, Hj Khalid Mazlan and principals of schools involved. – SS [FL]
