SPPS, SPU Intend to Carve UMS’ Name in Malaysia Book of Records

MBORTHURSDAY, 02 JANUARY 2014 – The School of Education and Social Development (SPPS) and the School of Medicine (SPU) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising a record breaking feat called ‘Malaysia Longest Distance Running on a Treadmill by a Group 2014’ starting 20 January 2014.

The feat which is running on a treadmill for 264 hours will be undertaken on rotation by nine UMS athletes. They consist of eight male and one female athlete and will be held at 1Borneo hyper mall in Kota Kinabalu.

According to UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, he believed that the programme was one way to increase one’s self-confidence to do something unanticipated.

Meanwhile, he also advised UMS community to continue with their efforts and to instil positive values in themselves by doing activities that were beneficial and would be an inspiration to others.

“I am proud of the efforts done by the two schools because we dare to take the risk to organise a programme to test the physical and mental strengths of the participants,” he added. He was speaking at the presentation of sponsorship for the programme.

Earlier, the Director of the programme, Laura Simon said, the university’s motto ‘Strive to Excel’ was the motivation for them to carve UMS’ name in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBoR) in 2014 as a birthday gift to UMS in conjunction with its 20th anniversary this year.

“To enlist our name in the Malaysia Book of Records 2014, we need to break the record which was set by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Samarahan since 2012,” he said.

UiTM Samarahan held the record since 2012 when they erased the old record held by Universiti Malaya (UM) in 2011, with a new record of 120 hours run conducted over 5 days by 9 runners.

At the event, the ‘Malaysia Longest Distance Running on a Treadmill by a Group 2014’ received sponsorship from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Sagajuta Sabah Sdn. Bhd., Adabi Sabah Sdn.
