UMS Organises Sungkai National Seminar, Introduces Plantation Concept

ums sungkaiWEDNESDAY, 29 APRIL – The Sungkai National Seminar was a platform to introduce another product that has the potential to develop this state through crop plantation and forestry plantation concept.

According to the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, the seminar aimed to provide knowledge and share ideas regarding the Sungkai tree, technology, usability and economic potential of the Sungkai tree cultivation.

Even though the research on Sungkai tree is still new in Malaysia, it has the potential to be developed as the main component in manufacturing high quality furniture, sports equipment, decorative veneer and cabinets.

The seminar was organised in this country for the first time involving presentations by speakers from Indonesia and government agencies including private firms that focused on the technological aspect of cultivation, tree growth, potential use of the tree and economic potential from the Sungkai tree.

He said this at the opening ceremony of the Sungkai National Seminar at the Postgraduate Auditorium UMS in Kota Kinabalu.

His speech was read by the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Natural Resources, UMS, Professor Dr. Baba Musta.

With the theme “Sungkai- Forest Plantation of the Future” Seminar 2 was attended by almost 200 researchers and players in the timber and forest industry of the country.

It was officiated by the Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Haji Sairin Karno.

The seminar was organised by the Faculty of Sciences and Natural Resources, UMS; Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM); Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) and Sabapuri Nursery Sabah (SNS). – SS (fl)
