THURSDAY, 8 OCTOBER – Students should improve their mastery of the English language besides being knowledgeable to compete in this competitive world, said Tan Sri Azman Hashim, AMCORP Group Executive Chairman and AmBank Group Chairman.

He said many were ashamed to speak in the English language nowadays even though 80 percent of the world were using it as an international language.

“Take China for example, the language used in their road or direction signs are in Chinese and English.  The same in Madinah, Arab Saudi where English is used in their road signs,” he said.

He was speaking to more than 5,000 students and staff of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Syarahan Kinabalu held at Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall), yesterday.

Tan Sri Azman who is AMCORP Group Executive Chairman and AmBank Group Chairman said, the private sector strongly emphasised on the mastery of English amongst its staff.

“The recruitment of staff in private sector requires them to have a certain proficiency in English,” he further added.

Also present at the ceremony were the Chairman of the Board of Directors of UMS, Tun Zaki Tun Azmi; Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah and members of the Board of Directors as well as the Principal Officers of the university. – (fl)
