Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Training Workshop on Phytoplankton Analysis

Unit for Harmful Alga Bloom Studies (UHABS), BMRI organized a training workshop on phytoplankton analysis on 2 & 3 November 2017. Three well-known international scientists: Prof. Dr. Victor Kuwahara (Soka University, Tokyo Japan), Dr. Sandric Leong (Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore) and Professor Emeritus Michael Borowitzka (Algae R&D Centre, Tasmanian Branch, Murdoch University, Australia) were invited as speakers.

A total of 15 participants consisting of staff and postgraduate students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Soka Universiti (Tokyo Japan), National University of Singapore (NUS) and AstarLab, (Singapore) attended this training. All the participants were exposed to public talks, hands-on practical fieldworks and  latest laboratory techniques on phytoplankton analysis. The topics discussed in the training workshop were: 

  • 1) Bio-optical oceanography: In-situ radiometer and inherent optical properties,
  • 2) The potential & Economic value of phytoplankton
  • 3) Advanced tools and techniques in Phytoplankton studies.
