UMS Partners with Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort

The Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is set to collaborate with Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort on four key initiatives designed to benefit both organizations.

These initiatives include industrial training placements for FSMP students, joint staff training programs, support for FSMP activities, and research and innovation collaborations.

According to FSMP Dean, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Hasmadi Mamat, the collaboration, formalized through a letter of intent, is specifically focused on the Food Service Program at FSMP.

“FSMP will share its expertise in food service and safety, while Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort will provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in hands-on training, including industrial placements.

“This partnership allows FSMP students to apply theoretical knowledge gained in lectures to real-world work environments,” he stated.

“The letter of intent is valid for one year and will be followed by a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further strengthen the collaboration,” he added.

Meanwhile, General Manager of Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort, Fiona Hagan, emphasized the resort’s need for FSMP’s expertise in managing food and material waste.

“Shangri-La Rasa Ria is delighted to embrace this collaboration with FSMP.

“We place great importance on food safety and quality service for our guests and staff. Thus, this partnership will greatly benefit the resort's management by leveraging FSMP’s expertise,” she said.

The signing ceremony was officiated by Hasmadi on behalf of FSMP UMS and Fiona representing Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort.

Also present at the ceremony were FSMP Deputy Dean (Academic and International), Associate Professor Dr. Wolyna Pindi, and Shangri-La Rasa Ria’s Director of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance), Yvonne Sipain.
