FPP Intensify Effectiveness of Tutor Newspaper Supplement Research

tutor1THURSDAY, 19 JUNE – Taking the cue from the success of several schools such as SK Kepayan (Kota Kinabalu), SK Puun Tunoh (Penampang), SK Sg. Bedaun (Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan) and SK Surati (Papar) which was said to achieve success by just using the Utusan Malaysia Education supplement Tutor, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) would use this opportunity to do research on the effectiveness of using this education supplement.

“For this reason, UMS deems it necessary to carry out academic research to prove the validity of this supplement for a period of 17 weeks which had started on 6 May 2014, said the Dean of FPP, Prof. Dr. Ismail Ibrahim at the handing over ceremony of the Tutor Education Supplement held at SMK Tebobon this morning.

He added, the role and cooperation among teachers were highly demanded especially teachers teaching the Mathematics and Science subjects in order to ensure that the supplement be fully utilised during the Teaching and Learning period to realise this research.

“The teachers were also given the option to change the questions based on the materials available at the end of each month starting from June to August as an intervention process and their scores will be recorded at the end of each affected month including the final examination results.”

Prof. Ismail also suggested that the schools made a compilation of the newspapers so that these can be used as a reference in future.

tutor2“While it is not a guarantee that the school will succeed through this method but at least they accept this challenge with an open mind,” he said.

Earlier, Assistant Director, School Management Sector, State Education Department, Mohd Idris Putih commended the efforts undertaken by UMS in sponsoring the additional reading materials such as this Tutor Education Supplement, to the selected schools in the state.

“The Department of Education supports this effort because the performance and achievement in education would be achieved in accordance with the Education Development Plan 2013-2025,” he added.

For the record, FPP had previously sponsored a total of 14,994 copies to schools located in the interior such as the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tanjung Labian and SK Telisai in Lahad Datu, SK Pementerian (Nabawan), SK Kuala Tomani (Tenom), SK Sahabat (Pitas) and SK Pinangkau (Beluran).

This time, FPP sponsored a total of 13,964 copies to SMK Tebobon, Menggatal with 7,424 copies for Form 3 for 16 weeks involving 464 students, while for SPM level a total of 6,540 copies for a total of 327 students.

Also present at the ceremony was the Outstanding Principal of SK Tebobon, Loh Kok Cheang and Utusan Malaysia Marketing Executive, Celestina Ubing. – CD (fl)
