GreenTHURSDAY, 02 MAYIn support of Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) efforts toward becoming the first EcoCampus in Malaysia, the Finance and Banking Management Club (HE06), School of Business and Economics (SPE) had set up a committee known as the ‘HE06 Green Team’.

The Director of the committee, Rano Karno said the objective of the establishment of Green Team was to support the university’s commitment to become an EcoCampus, beside fostering the spirit of love for the environment among UMS students.

“The culture of caring for the environment should be sown, nurtured and practiced at the campus so that this earth that we loved so much would be saved, besides moulding students to possess great personality,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Programme for Finance and Banking Management, Amer Azlan Abdul Jamal said, the aim of the university towards becoming an EcoCampus needs the commitment and support from all sides including students. He said, students play an important role in creating positive culture at university level.

“It is our fervent hope that effort such as this would bring about awareness to all especially our students on the importance of caring for the environment for our own harmony,” he added.

The official opening of the establishment of the said committee was done by the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Postgraduate, Dr. Mohd. Rahimie Abdul Karim recently. – FL

sps jazzTHURSDAY, 02 MAYThe Dean of the School of Arts Studies (SPS), Assoc. Prof. Abdul Jamal Abdul Hamid wanted more Jazz musicians among students be produced to revitalise the Sabah music industry.

He said this at the Mango Jazz Night which was held at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) last night in conjunction with the International Jazz Festival 2013.

According to him, the event was held for the very first time in UMS and wanted it to be an annual affair thus expanding this particular music genre here in Malaysia.

When asked on the programme in response to this event he said that the Jazz music workshop with Yuichiro Tokuda and the Ralyzzdig group’s complimentary performance for students were among the activities held.

More than 500 people filled the Dewan Resital UMS and were thoroughly entertained by the performances of the Ralyzzdig group, Rene Barrow, Asif Pishori Jazz Trio, Gavin Lawrence Groove Unit, Jackfruit, JPO Strings and UMS students Jazz Group.

Also present at the event were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof and the Head of the Japanese Consulate Office, Hirofumi Morikawa.

The Jazz International Festival are held every 30 April yearly and recommended by the Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation United Nations (UNESCO) to increase the public’s awareness on the role of Jazz music in propagating universal values.

Minggu pelaburanMONDAY, 29 APRILThe School of Business and Economics (SPE) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently held an Investment Week Programme 2013. The programme which was organised by the Financial Management and Banking Club (HE06) SPE at the school’s premises was officiated by the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Postgraduate SPE, Dr. Mohd. Rahimie Abdul Karim.

In his speech he stressed the need for students to emphasise on the importance of financial management so as not to be trapped in financial crisis in future. He said students should put into practice all knowledge that they have gained in the financial field and investment as a preparatory step towards entering the working world.

Earlier, the Programme Director, Fatin Sahira said the Investment Week which was held for four days was aimed at exposing students to the importance of savings and investments for the future, also attracting students especially school students to be students with a high level of literacy knowledge on finance.

Among the programmes that was organised throughout the week were Stocks Simulation Competition, Financial Planning Workshop, Trade and Economy Quiz including Sales Carnival. All the programmes were participated by students from the higher education institutions, students from secondary schools around Kota Kinabalu and SPE students themselves.

Among the activities which received encouraging response was the Trade and Economy Quiz which saw nine secondary schools around Kota Kinabalu taking part in the quiz. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Putatan emerged as the winner whilst SM All Saints took the second spot and SMK Tenghilan the third. teaterWEDNESDAY, 01 MAYThe School of Arts Studies (SPS) continued to carve its name in the local theatre arena which had made a name for Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in the State Level Theatre Competition which was held at the National Cultural and Arts Department (JKKN) Sabah recently.

At the competition, UMS showcased the script written by Tasia Arlina Ismail entitled ‘Dialogue to the Moon’ under the supervision of SPS lecturer, Dr. Andika Aziz Hussin.

The manuscript brought success to the Grup Teater-Lab SPS when they emerged as the winner in both Presentation and Best Actor through Amsali Pisali, thus continuing to make UMS’ name wellknown in Borneo.

With the win, UMS brought home cash prize of RM3,500 as the Champion in the Presentation Category and RM500 through Best Actor including a trophy.

The competition organised by Green Leaf Theatre House in collaboration with Anti Dadah Malaysia Association (PEMADAM) Sabah branch aimed to bring awareness to youths on social issues and the danger of dadah abuse. – FL

recording seniMONDAY, 29 APRILThe production of a video describing the special practice using the Noni leaves during confinement has made Kelab Seni Recording Team (S-ReT) School of Arts Studies (SPS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) the winner of the best video at the recent film-making forum and workshop.

The video which was in the form of a docudrama had attracted the judges’ attention in the programme which was jointly organised by the Malaysian Association of Creativity & Innovation (MACRI) and Project Linkages. The forum which was held at Kolej Yayasan Sabah saw Kelab Seni Recording Team competing with other contestants consisting of students from UMS, Kolej Yayasan Sabah and other institutions.

Besides the best video competition, the programme themed ‘Fostering Relationship’ also featured experienced facilitators who conducted the forum and workshop which was held for three days. Among them were Exco committee, Dato’ Dr. Marzalin Mansur, the Director of Project Linkages, Ramesh Pallai and the winner of the Film-maker Award, Gary Chong.

Throughout the forum and workshop, the participants were also exposed to knowledge sharing through experiences, theory and practical activities pertaining to film-making which included pre-production, production and post-production. Participants were also given some challenges in the making of a short video in groups themed ‘Knowledge Sharing’. – FL
