WEDNESDAY, 19 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) once again was in the limelight when it grabbed five gold medals and three silver at the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2016, recently.

The medals were won through eight researches contested at the exhibition, which was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

Two gold medals were contributed through the research entitled, Firmeco, Eco-Friendly Edible Cutlery and Functional Seaweed Snack with Prebiotic by a study group headed by Associate Professor Dr. Chye Fook Yee.

The other three gold medals were obtained by the research team led by Professor Dr. Rossita Shapawi, Dr. Raihana Musawwir and Dr. Ramraini Ali Hassan through their research namely Garoupa-Like, UMS Wheel for Bishop Scoring, and Ib-Plan Software and Manual.

As for the silver medal, two were from the research group led by Mohd. Suffian Misaran @ Misran with their research titled Mis-Wind Turbine, and by Associate Professor Dr. Dg. Maryama Ag. Daud with PSS Reps Counter.

Another silver medal earned was through the research entitled Kappa-Tank, a joint-study by Professor Dr. Rossita Shapawi and Wahidatul Husna Zuldin.

WEDNESDAY, 18 MAY – The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Student Parliamentary Session was held this morning with debates and issues brought up by the student leaders.

The debates were further boosted when the conference involving about 50 student leader representatives convened at the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

Interestingly, the conference observed the ethics and protocol of the actual state legislative assembly sitting and was chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Datuk Dr. Johnnson Tee.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali when met said, the Student Parliamentary Session was a proactive approach taken by the management to enhance UMS students.

“It is in line with the first of ten shifts in the Malaysian Education Blueprint (Higher Education) 2015-2025, to produce holistic graduates,” he said while expressing gratitude to the Sabah State Assembly Speaker, Datuk Syed Abas Syed Ali for allowing the use of the state legislative assembly hall.

Dr. Ismail also expressed a sense of pride when UMS, a public university (UA) became the first in Malaysia to hold a Student Parliamentary sitting at the state legislative assembly hall.

TUESDAY, 17 MAY –Tun Mustapha Residential College (KKTM) recently organised a Fitness Rally in conjunction with KKTM Open Day.

According to the director of the programme, Narmatha A/P Shanker, the programme aimed to encourange KKTM residents and the local community to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“I am pleased that this programme ran smoothly and reached its objective that is to foster closer ties with one another,” she said.

The programme, which was held for two hours was led by Mazry Ismail from Fanatic Fitness Lovers leading participants in some fitness rally namely FUZE Fitness, Zumba Fitness and HipHop Dance.

Mazry explained that any exercise done was to achieve a certain goal and that was to improve and maintain health.

“Group events such as this is able to inculcate the spirit to continue being active among the public,” she concluded.  – (fl)

TUESDAY, 17 MAY – Three postgraduate students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently competed at the 3 Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) 2016 at the national level held at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

According to a statement issued by the Centre for Postgraduate Studies, UMS was represented by students from the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Ruslan Mapeala for the Social Science Category; Lorita Angeline from the Faculty of Engineering (FKJ) for the Engineering Category, and Lai Yun Mei (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) for the Science and Technology Category.

The statement added that UMS participants for the 3MT competition had shown quality presentation and gave stiff competition to other competitors from local universities.

Participation in the 3MT provided a good opportunity to experience and share the results of their research with the public.

The 3MT competition is an annual event involving public university students undertaking the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies that requires them to present their PhD research results in not more than 180 seconds in layman terms.

The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Council of Deans of Postgraduate Studies, with UUM as host.

54 participants participated in the competition which aimed to find the best presenter to represent Malaysia at the 3MT international level competition at University of Queensland in October 2016.

Three participants from UMS were chosen after beating eight other participants at the 3MT Competition UMS, which was held on 23 March 2016.

3MT Competition originally started at the University of Queensland, Australia in 2008, and is now held in more than 200 universities worldwide. – SS (fl)

FRIDAY, 13 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently won the International  Students Achievement Award 2015 at the International Appreciation Night 2016 ceremony held at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).

Director of the Centre for International Affairs, Molly Donna Awang Sham said, this award was a great accomplishment for UMS in strengthening internationalisation among its international students.

“The award takes into account several criteria namely, management of best international students, numbers of international students from various countries and university working relationship,” she explained.

The award was presented by the Director of the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Facility (CTEF), Professor Dato’ Dr. Morshidi Sirat.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah through a statement via his Facebook also said, the success was a recognition of UMS’ efforts in promoting UMS as the best destination for international students to study in various disciplines at the university.

Apart from this award, the ceremony which was held at Sultan Mizan Hall, UMT also offered the International Students Diversity Achievement Award 2015.

Also present at the ceremony were the Vice-Chancellor of UMT, Professor Dato’ Dr. Nor Aieni Haji Mokhtar and the Director of Education Malaysia Division, Ministry of Higher Education, Jamalulail Abu Bakar. – (fl)
