paediatrikMONDAY, 12 MAY – About 500 participants attended the 1st Borneo Paediatrics & Paediatric Surgery Conference 2014 which was held at the Main Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah on the 9 and 10 May.

The inaugural seminar was jointly organised by the Women and Children’s Hospital Sabah in conjunction with UMS 20th anniversary with the theme ‘Healthy Children, Better Future’.

According to the State Health Department Director, Dr. Christina Rundi, the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (formerly known as the School of Medicine), UMS had produced many graduates who were now building their career and became specialists at the Ministry of Health.

“We at the State Health Department are grateful with UMS for the contributions made in increasing the ratio number of doctors to patients in the state,” she said when declaring open the conference.

He added that the participants were fortunate to be able to share their experiences with some paediatricians who were specially flown in from Australia, New Zealand and Brunei.

Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences UMS, Prof. Dr. D. Kamarudin D. Mudin said students will take courses in paediatrics in the forth and fifth year and surgery in the third and fifth year.

“Every year, UMS students are sent to the Women and Children’s Hospital Sabah and we thank the hospital for accepting our undergrads,” he said.

During the two-day conference, a total of two keynote papers were presented by Paediatric Cardiologists UMS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asmiati Abd. Hamid entitled ‘Congenital Heart Disease: Facts We Should Know’ and the President of the Australian, New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeon (ANZAPS), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deborah Bailey entitled ‘Transportation of Ill Children’.

In addition, a total of 12 research papers would be presented during the six sessions involving paediatrics from within and outside the country. – CD (fl)

PPSA KURSUSFRIDAY, 09 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) always place importance on quality in every aspect of management and governance of the university, especially for the purpose of teaching and learning (P&P).

Recently, the Strategic and Academic Management Centre (PPSA) organised an ISO 9001:2008 (P&P) UMS Internal Quality Audit Course at the Event Gallery, Chancellery Building.

According to a statement issued by PPSA, the course aimed at providing exposure and training to new UMS Internal Auditors of MS ISO 9001:2008 quality.

The statement also said the course was an effort and commitment by the university towards increasing the number of qualified Internal Auditors in UMS.

At the course, participants were exposed to the five phases of implementation of audit from Audit Planning Techniques, Audit Preparation, Audit Conduct, Audit Report and Audit Follow-up.

A total of 20 participants attended the ISO 9001:2008 (P&P) Internal Quality Audit course which was conducted by MS ISO Malaysia quality consultant, Haji Mohammad Nazri Abd. Rani. – ZMD (fl)

debatdiraja1 2014FRIDAY, 9 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is given the honour to host the 16th Higher Learning Institutions Royal Debate which will start from 9 to 14 May.

The competition which started in 1995, will be participated by 24 universities across the country; 20 public higher learning institutions (IPTA) and 4 private universities as invited participants namely Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Multimedia University (MMU), Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UniRazak) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN).

The competition this year will follow the ‘Parliament’ format which was initiated by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). A total of 4 categories will be contested; Bahasa Melayu Utama, Bahasa Inggeris Utama, Bahasa Melayu Muda and Bahasa Inggeris Muda.

As with past competitions, the contest will see debaters presenting their arguments and facts, displaying their maturity in conveying ideas with sensational actions of a debater and expounding their arguments with confidence and commitment.

His Excellency the Head of State, Tun Datuk Seri Panglima (DR.) Haji Juhar Haji Mahiruddin is expected to officiate the Royal Debate Finals on 14 May at the Recital Hall, School of Arts, UMS. – (fl)

kursus pengelasTHURSDAY, 08 MAY – A total of 43 employees from various Departments, Faculties, Centres, Institutes and Units in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) received their appointments as Official Secret Document Classifier Officer officially today.

The appointment took place at a ceremony for classifier officers course and the presentation of appointment certificates to the officials at the Events Gallery, UMS.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah in his speech at the ceremony said the appointment was under Section 2B Official Secrets Act 1972 which was public officer from a Division/Department responsible in the classification of information and official government documents in the form of official letters, information or materials by confidentiality category which were ‘Top Secret’, ‘Secret’, ‘Confidential’ or ‘Restricted’.

“The appointment of classifier officers appointed by the Minister of Education II, Dato’ Idris Jusoh today is essential to ensure that official documents especially documents which are classified are protected and managed in accordance with the right procedures to prevent from leakage of information.

“We hope that the Classifier Officers will carry out their roles and responsibilities more effectively and efficiently,” he added.

Earlier, UMS Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Mohd. Said said the course was in response to the 4th University Key Result Areas (KRA-UMS) field which was strengthening governance, leadership and delivery systems. He explained that UMS was the 6th university which conducted this process, the other universities were UiTM, UKM, Unisza, UPM and USIM.

The classifier officers course was organised by the Registrar Department and was conducted by the Chief Security Officer, Prime Minister Department, Awang Mohd. Ismail Awang Mohd. Nordin. – MA (fl)

SPU PaediatricTHURSDAY, 08 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Women and Children Hospital Sabah will host the inaugural 1st Borneo Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery Conference starting tomorrow (Friday).

More than 400 participants are expected to participate in the conference which will be held at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences UMS.

The two-day conference will also discuss topics on issues of child protection, paediatric cardiology, and advances in the management of paediatric surgery.

In addition, the 1st Borneo Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery Conference will also present some research papers from among the participants.

According to Head of the Organising Committee, Dr. Shunmugam Rajah, the conference will also incorporate members and health professional organisations from within and outside the country including the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand.

“The organisation is also a continuation of the celebration of UMS 20 year establishment this year,” he added.
