badminton 2MONDAY, 21 APRILThe Housewives and Women Staff Club (KESUMBA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to actively forge their ties with the Navy Family Welfare Body (BAKAT Laut), Royal Malaysian Navy Base (TLDM) Sepanggar.

Recently, KESUMBA had a friendly match with BAKAT Laut which was held for the first time as part of their aim in inculcating sports among its members.

At the competition, a total of five events were fielded; Deck Hockey, Futsal, Badminton, Netball and Volleyball.

KESUMBA beat BAKAT Laut in three events namely Futsal (10-0), Badminton (3-2) and Netball (11-10). Whilst BAKAT Laut trounced KESUMBA in Deck Hockey (3-0) and Volleyball (3-0).

According to the President of KESUMBA, Datin Baidah Ibrahim; the events were in tandem with the objectives of KESUMBA which was to engage and collaborate with outside agencies in improving the university’s image.

“Win or lose is not the primary aim but more so the meeting and relationship formed, exchange of thoughts and ideas which can bring mutual benefit for both parties,” said the wife of the Vice-Chancellor of UMS.

Also present was the Chairman of BAKAT Laut, Datin Ir. Nor Aishah Mohamed Nasri and KESUMBA Trustee Holder, Datin Nurah Bungsu.

The Friendly Match was a continuation to the courtesy call by KESUMBA to BAKAT Laut on 19 March this year. – ZMD (fl)

 Magandai teroka siswaMONDAY, 21 APRIL – The Student Mentor Club (PR-Siswa) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) had for the first time partnered with UMS Recreation Club, UMS Four Wheel Drive Club Volunteers and the School of Medicine in the X-Magandai Community X-Plorasi Programme which ended yesterday.

According to the Programme Director, Muhammad Yusuf Mohd. Sobery, the activities which was in the form of a rugged expedition for three days and two nights was participated by 30 participants with 15 four-wheel drive vehicles.

Speaking when contacted by reporters, he said the programme aimed to encourage and motivate students and parents received overwhelming response from the community of Magandai Village particularly among the students and teachers of Sekolah Kebangsaan Magandai.

“Besides knowledge sharing, we also had a wealth of experience especially first-hand understanding of the bitter sweet challenges and the lack of life among the interior communities,” he said.

Muhammad Yusuf, who is also the President of UMS PR-Siswa Club expressed his gratitude to the Department of Student Affairs and Alumni (HEP) in particular to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Hj. Kasim Hj. Md Mansur, for always supporting their efforts in realising this community-based programme.

“We also thank the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic and International, Prof. Dr. Shariff Abd. Kadir S. Omang Al-Haj and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation UMS, Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof for their support and in making this programme a success,” he further added.

With the theme ‘Exploring Reality, Helping the Community’, the programme which was held in conjunction with UMS 20th anniversary was filled with a variety of educational programmes in addition to a tree planting event as a symbolic gesture in support of nature conservation as a shared responsibility.

For the record, UMS PR-Siswa Club is more synonymous with Skuad Rakan Ceria (Skuad RC) UMS which is under the guidance of psychology officer of HEP, Adzmil Abidin; who is always positive in reaching out to the community to build an intelligent and productive community. – SS (fl)

Norti 1FRIDAY, 18 APRILThe Human Resource Development Sector, Human Resource Division, Registrar Department had successfully organised a Certificate Presentation Ceremony for the Bridging Programme for Lab Assistants February 2011 intake at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The certificates were presentation by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah.

Earlier in his opening speech, he stressed that staff must constantly improve their knowledge, skills and competency in carrying out their responsibilities.

In addition, he also expressed hope that UMS employees would be dedicated to the university besides continuing in their pursuit of knowledge.

Meanwhile, UMS Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Hj. Mohd. Said in his opening speech said the Bridging Programme was an initiative to produce more practical and able lab assistants in tandem with their working environment based on science and technology.

According to him, a Lab Assistant’s job was important not to mention their involvement in the research and teaching in UMS.

He added that the course would run for four semesters every weekend for two years and was seen to be able to expose participants to a wide range of knowledge and skills related to science and humanity.

“Hopefully with the knowledge and trainings acquired, the employees involved would be more confident and would be able to serve in a more productive, innovative and competitive way,” Datuk Abdullah said ending his speech.

A total of 22 laboratory assistants received certificates at the function. Also present were the Heads of Department and facilitators.

Hari Siswi terbuka CDTHURSDAY, 17 APRILResidential College Cemerlang Dinamik (Kolej CD) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) actively implements various student activities.

From today until Sunday, Kolej CD will hold and its inaugural Open Day  aimed at strengthening ties among undergrads who are from different background.

In addition, it is also to give exposure to the undergrads about the management of a programme at residential college or university.

Among its contents are entrepreneurship expo, blood donation drive, UMS Got Talent, official opening of a mini garden, safety demonstration and parade by uniformed bodies, games and a seminar by the Department of Youth and Sports.

The opening ceremony is expected to be officiated by the Minister of Local Government and Housing Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Mohd. Noor at Kolej CD Multipurpose Hall on Sunday.

Kolej CD will also be organising Undergrads Day which will feature interesting activities.

The programme inspired by its Head, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin aimed to provide opportunities for female undergrads to showcase their talents and skills through various activities such as hantaran arrangement and cooking competition.

It is also to expose them to a variety of techniques and practices of health care and healthy lifestyle through the active and lively segment, health talks, beauty segment and cooking demonstration.

The Undergrads Day will be officially opened by the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Hjh. Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. Ahmad Ayid on Saturday. – SS (fl)

Bengkel SPTATHURSDAY, 17 APRILAgarwood tree planting is gaining popularity among entrepreneurs and farmers in Malaysia because it could yield high returns.
 
Thus, consistent with its role as a learning centre, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the School of International Tropical Forestry (SPTA) had organised a National Workshop on Agarwood Inoculation 2014.

A two-day workshop was held to share information on new methods and technologies in the Agarwood industry by local and foreign experts.

In his opening speech, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Yahya Hussien said the industry was seen to be growing rapidly with an increasing number of Agarwood farmers in Sabah every year.

“I believe this workshop is timely to gather all Agarwood entrepreneurs either from the government or private sector to jointly find the most suitable method in the inoculation of Agarwood in Sabah,” he said. His speech was read by the Deputy Director of Agriculture Department Sabah, Julia Lamdin.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah said the Agarwood entrepreneurs should have the knowledge on the inoculation of Agarwood to have good returns.

“Therefore, this workshop will provide a useful entry to participants thus able to provide a solid foundation for the advancement of the Agarwood industry in Sabah,” he said in his speech read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Hj. Kasim Hj. Md. Mansur.

The National Workshop on Agarwood Inoculation 2014 organised in collaboration with the G&G Management and Consultant Sdn. Bhd. had successfully brought together about 200 entrepreneurs from all over the nation. – ZMD (fl)
