THURSDAY, 8 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Auxiliary Police finished second in the Institution of Higher Learning Category in at the 62nd Official Birthday of the Head of State (TYT), Tun Juhar Mahiruddin 2015 Parade held last Saturday.

UMS Auxiliary Police Chief Contingent, Insp. (AP) Rakam Singh A/L Karam Singh said, the total strength of 30 members who participated the UMS Auxiliary Police Contingent for the parade had been mustering their every effort and teamwork that had resulted in an excellent commitment although they only managed to capture second place.

Indeed there were many smart and better contingents in the parade in the team event, but UMS Auxiliary Police had an extra advantage even though they had only a short time to practice.

“I am pleased with the dedication shown by all the members and would like to thank them for their commitment in upholding the reputation of UMS,” said Insp. (AP) Rakam Singh.

UMS took home a trophy, certificate and cash prize of RM1,000.

Insp. Rakam added that they identified their shortcomings to achieve greater success in future.

He thanked the management of UMS in particular the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah; Head of Security UMS, Lt. Col Abdul Talib Ariffin and Acting Registrar of UMS, No’man Datuk Ahmad for their trust on the team and to represent UMS at the parade. – (fl)

THURSDAY, 8 OCTOBER – Students should improve their mastery of the English language besides being knowledgeable to compete in this competitive world, said Tan Sri Azman Hashim, AMCORP Group Executive Chairman and AmBank Group Chairman.

He said many were ashamed to speak in the English language nowadays even though 80 percent of the world were using it as an international language.

“Take China for example, the language used in their road or direction signs are in Chinese and English.  The same in Madinah, Arab Saudi where English is used in their road signs,” he said.

He was speaking to more than 5,000 students and staff of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Syarahan Kinabalu held at Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall), yesterday.

Tan Sri Azman who is AMCORP Group Executive Chairman and AmBank Group Chairman said, the private sector strongly emphasised on the mastery of English amongst its staff.

“The recruitment of staff in private sector requires them to have a certain proficiency in English,” he further added.

Also present at the ceremony were the Chairman of the Board of Directors of UMS, Tun Zaki Tun Azmi; Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah and members of the Board of Directors as well as the Principal Officers of the university. – (fl)

FRIDAY, 8 OCTOBER – The Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised an Islamic Arts Festival (FKKI) 2015.

The programme was jointly organised by a coalition of JAKMAS from each centralised residential college headed by the JAKMAS Residential College Excellent (Kg. E) Spirituality and Personality Development Exco, Muhammad Farhan Mohamad Amran.

The two-day festival saw some activities planned to enliven the programme, amongst them were Al-Quran reading competition and Nasyid, entrepreneurship expo, Story Telling Competition and Qasidah.

The highlight of the programme was a Forum entitled “Memperkasa Pemuda, Membangun Ummah” (Empowering Youth, Building Ummah) that was moderated by two invited panellists.

They were the runner up of Imam Muda Season 2, Imam Muda Nazrul and a former member of the UNIC nasyid group, Fitri Haris.

The forum was well received when more than 1,500 people attended the programme with a chargeable fee of RM3.00 for UMS students and RM5.00 for members of the public.

50% of the proceed would be donated to the Maahad Darul Hadis Fund, Kg. Sembulan, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. - (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 7 OCTOBER – The Azman Hashim UMS Gallery would be another new landmark in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Campus.

To be build at one of the most beautiful locations in UMS campus overlooking the South China Sea, construction of the gallery would be funded the Azman Hashim Foundation with a total funding of  RM15 million.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Azman Hashim UMS Gallery was officiated by the Executive Chairman of AMCORP Group and Chairman of AmBank Group, Tan Sri Azman Hashim and was witnessed by UMS Chairman of the Board of UMS, Tun Zaki Tun Azmi and the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.

The Azman Hashim UMS Gallery to be built facing Likas Bay would have a panoramic view of Kota Kinabalu City, surrounded by lush greeneries  atop a hill.

The proposed construction of the gallery included a circular structure characterised by an open and closed exhibition  hall with corridor.  Seminar Rooms and conservatory area are located on the upper floor whilst utilities would be at the lower floor.

The deck at the uppermost floor of the gallery enables visitors to view the sights, which will also be one of the attractions of the gallery.  Construction of the building is scheduled to begin in mid-2016 and expected to be completed in 2018. – MA (fl)

TUESDAY, 6 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in partnership with Talisman Malaysia Limited organised a workshop  on scholarship and career in the oil and gas industry dedicated to engineering students of UMS.

The two-day workshop which started on Monday was one of the existing cooperation between UMS and Talisman Malaysia, aimed to provide early exposure to students who undertake courses related to the oil and gas industry.

Through the workshop, the engineering students, especially first and second year students were exposed to the method of CV writing and skills in job interview and career prospects and the application of scholarship offered by Talisman Malaysia.

Participants also had the opportunity to learn about the skills and training in the oil and gas industry perspective.

The workshop was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) UMS, Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, at the UMS Foundation Auditorium.

Also present at the event were Talisman Malaysia Human Resources Manager, Johan Moktar; Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Ir. Dr. Rosalam Sarbatly and representative from Talisman Malaysia in Sabah, Eddie Abdullah. – (fl)
