FRIDAY, 29 MAY – The Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) Residential College E through the Entrepreneurship Exco is organising a night market programme that provides opportunity for students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to become entrepreneurs.

Programme Director, Norain Amira when contacted by media said the night market held at Padang Kawad (Parade Ground) UMS starting from 19 May highlights 45 stalls that sells a wide variety of delicacies and beverages including products from their own creativity.

“This is an opportunity for UMS students to get a positive overview on entrepreneurship and I believe this would interest them,” she said.

Norain added, there would be busking group from the Residential College E Acoustic Club every night to entertain the visitors.

Pasar Malam @ E is open daily from 5 pm to 9.30 pm.

THURSDAY, 28 MAY – The Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah once again organised a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Community Programme (STEM) II recently at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kemabong, Tenom.

According to the programme supervisor, Dr. Siew Nyet Moi @ Sopiah Abdullah, it was a follow-up to STEM I held at SMK Badin, Tuaran early May.

“This programme managed by Group 2 Students of Master of Education Postgraduate Programme provides opportunities for rural students to identify more closely and strengthen understanding of STEM,” she told UMS media in a statement.

She said the main focus of the activities carried out were to encourage the multiplying of students’ creativity and problem solving skills at the same time build confidence and to choose STEM as a career.

She was speaking to 21 students under the Master of Education (Science), nine Frist Year undergraduates under Science and 37 Forms 4 and 5 students under Pure Science were also involved in the programme.

“Postgraduate Students under the Education (Science) programme act as facilitator, while the undergrads were observers and facilitators for three STEM activities carried out.

“Overall STEM II programme achieved its objective on the basis from feedback among the majority of participants who expressed that the activities done were exciting, helped them to understand the concept of science more easily, and helped them to apply concepts learned to their daily lives,” she added.

The programme was also attended by the Senior Assistant of Form 6 SMK Kemabong, Ng Sui Kiang @ Aylwin. – SS (fl)

THURSDAY, 28 MAY – The Association of Psychology, Education and Sports Science Students (PERMAPPS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised the programme ‘Lambaian Menara Gading’ at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Beaufort 3.

According to Programme Director, Dayang Norlisa Datu Harun, the two-day motivational programme was participated by 95 students of Form one to Five of the said school.

“We share the importance of education and learning experience in UMS with the students of the school and hope that the sharing would push them to further their education,” she said when met by media.

Earlier when opening the programme, the Principal of SMK Beaufort 3, Roslinah Suhailin said she hoped the collaboration between UMS and the school on motivational programmes would continue.

“This programme is very useful and inspires school students to further their education up to tertiary level,” she said.

THURSDAY, 28 MAY – The involvement of students in the Co-curriculum Carnival would shape them into individuals with a winning personality.

Deputy Director of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Labuan International Campus (KAL), Associate Professor Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal said, this is in line with the national higher education policies to produce Malaysians who are balanced and harmonious intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically.

He said the country’s goal is to create graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also competent, virtuous, responsible and the prosperity of the nation would be achieved through the implementation of the Co-Curriculum Carnival and indirectly creating and provide to the demands of current job market.

“Through this activity, I believe students will be able to observe, appreciate, analyse and solve problems through an approach that is more appropriate and reasonable in this challenging world. The learning process will make them more rational about some episodes in their lives besides making them students who are dynamic and credible,” he said.

He was representing UMSKAL Director, Associate Professor Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik in officiating the Co-Curriculum Carnival Semester 2 2014/2015 Session. – SS (fl)
