TUESDAY, 19 MAY – The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Community Networking Programme with Kampung Gudon, Menggatal held recently was not only a corporate social responsibility for UMS but also an attempt to foster closer ties with the residents of that village.
This can be seen with the various activities organised as prove that they were well received by the residents of the village and was praised by the village head, Mohadi Sabtu.
He said, such programme mattered most to the residents in the village, whilst at the same time further strengthen the existing bond of friendship between both sides.
“I represent the entire population of the village who are grateful to UMS especially the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah for taking the time to be with the residents of this village.
“it is hoped that the programme would continue in future,” he said, expressing a sense of pride to the Vice-Chancellor of UMS who originates from the village.
The four-day programme saw various activities undertaken including a gotong-royong (cleaning session) to clean the Muslim Cemetery, Community Hall, Mosque and Community Religious School.
Also held were student motivation programme, storytelling and poetry recital competition, health and nutrition talks and blood donation as well as Sabah dances workshop.
The closing ceremony and presentation of prizes to winners of the competition was presented by Datuk Harun.

15 UMS Students to Join Diplomat Student Attachment Training at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
MONDAY, 18 MAY – 15 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students will participate in the diplomat student attachment training programme at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs starting August.The programme organised by the ministry would see a group of UMS students in various faculties and disciplines of learning attached at Wisma Putra throughout the training period.
Foreign Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman presented credentials to 15 students involved in the Publicity and Public Diplomacy Programme: Malaysia Agreement 1963 Forum Series II, at the Main Lecture Hall Complex 2, UMS recently.
Through this programme, students will learn about communication skills and training, self image, presentation and other skills that will enable them to understand and practice ethics when dealing with international delegations.
Meanwhile, Dato’ Sri Anifah who acted as the moderator of the forum suggested that a special committee be formed to study issues related to the rights of the people of Sabah.
According to him, the forum was held to discuss solutions and consensus not only among local leaders but the community of this state.
“The special committee should review the most important issues including the 20 points, Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the preparation of a memorandum on the rights of the people of Sabah,” he said.
Some panel members involved were also seen giving their comments and views in this forum that included the former Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Yong Teck Lee; Bingkor Assemblyman, Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan; UMS lecturer, Dr. Ramzah Dambul; political activist, Zainnal Ajamain; lawyer, Haji Ansari Abdullah and Edward Bon.
Also present were the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Hjh. Zainab Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. MONDAY, 18 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) stepped up to response to the Ministry of Education’s call to promote students through Community Service Programme.Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah said, the approach helped UMS to get close to the public and to stimulate interest among school students to continue their studies in Public Universities (UA) especially at UMS.
“It is also in line with the Ministry of Education’s NKRA that welcomes all UA students in Malaysia to engage in community relations programmes,” he said when speaking at the opening ceremony of the Community Networking Programme in Kampung Gudon, Menggatal.
He said UMS’ involvement through community-based activities were fully supported especially when it was seen as a catalyst to improve the soft skills of students.
“My deepest appreciation to all the committee members for working very hard to make this community service programme a success,” he said.

MONDAY, 18 MAY - Faculty of Sciences and Natural Resources (FSSA), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for the first time held a disposal of files and records at Innovatory Furniture Sdn. Bhd., Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), recently.
The disposal method using fire in a boiler was seen to be more efficient and economical as it is closed and would reduce air pollution, which also produces heat.
According to FSSA Dean, Professor Dr. Baba Musta, such activity were important to ensure that the files and records were maintained according to rules and procedures adopted by the university in accordance with the responsibility to monitor, plan and implement the programme on disposal of files and records according to faculty were done periodically.
Meanwhile, FSSA Deputy Registrar, Hasmi Hashim said the activity was divided into two phases; first phase was conducted in September and October 2014 and received approval from the National Archives of Malaysia, Sabah Branch in April 2015.
“The second phase will be carried out before the fasting month this year,” he added.
Overall, a total of 351 general files of the faculty that had reached its retention maturity period as outlined by the Records Disposal Schedule, National Archives, had been disposed of.
The disposal activities was witnessed by the General Manager of Innovatory Furniture Sdn. Bhd., Justin Yap and Senior Lecturer of FSSA, Janshah Mokhtar. – ZMD (fl)

FRIDAY, 15 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) supported the effort of solo swimmer, Mohd. Ikhmil Faweds Mohd. Hanif, in charting a name in the ‘Malaysia Book of Records’ through a solo swim as far as 60 kilometres in the waters of Sabah, recently.
Ikhmil, 41 who hails from Johor started his swim from Kuala Penyu swimming across 32.39 nautical miles and finished at Tanjung Aru Beach in 24 hours 30 minutes.
According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Professor Dr. Ismail Ali, UMS had provided a conducive training area for Ikhmil, besides getting help from Sports Science programme teaching staff to help him prepare for this challenge.
“Ikhmil’s spirit should be emulated by all young people especially students of UMS in supporting the nation’s vision, he added.
In the challenge, Ikhmil’s swim was accompanied by two UMS dragon boats and 50 volunteers, led by Mohd. Taufik Nordin who also swam alongside Ikhmal as far as 300 metres to the finish line.
Meanwhile, two UMS students, Mohammad Irsyadiman Allmui and Mohd. Ishak Allmui had also accompanied the swimmer for 24 hours during this challenge. – ZMD (fl)
