WEDNESDAY, 28 MAY -The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Services, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the US Embassy Kuala Lumpur will be organising a free public screening of a documentary film on 'The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia', and a dialogue with the film director, James Redford.

The event will be held on Thursay, 29 May at Lecture Hall B1, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (School of Medicine) starting at 2.00 pm.

This is a film which provides a personal and uplifting account of the dyslexic experience from children, experts and iconic leaders, such as Sir Richard Branson and financier Charles Schwab. This film, not only clears up the misconceptions about the condition, but also paints a picture of hope for all who struggle with it. The Big Picture beautifully illustrates that while the condition is an obstacle, it also carries some unique advantages, and ultimately can be overcome.

TUESDAY, 27 MAY- “ Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 'Sahabat Media' supports the university's efforts in fostering the culture of awareness towards the preservation and conservation of forests.

Connie Pearl Suil of Utusan Borneo said UMS efforts are timely in sustaining our forests for our future generations.

For Therence Voo from New Sabah Times, forest conservation was important in reducing global warming which was a concern of the world community.

Sin Chew Daily reporter, Lau Siew Mei said the World Forestry Day celebration organised by the School of International Tropical Forestry (SPTA) UMS was seen capable in educating the public especially students about the importance of forest care.

He said it would instill the love for the environment and refrain from any activity that could destroy the natural wildlife.

All of them took part in the planting of trees as a sign of support for the conservation and preservation of forests. -SS (fl)

TUESDAY, 27 MAY – The active involvement of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in celebrating the World Forestry Day can instil a caring culture among the university community on the importance of maintaining the existing forest area.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, efforts by the university through the School of International Tropical Forestry (SPTA) was in line with the noble deeds to jointly cultivate a love of the forest.

“Before this, UMS through this school was also involved in a various activities of good causes such as tree-planting in conjunction with new student enrolment or other celebrations as well as inviting primary school students to visit UMS and introduce forest-themed and environmental activities,” he said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the World Forestry Day celebration UMS level. His speech was read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof.

Datuk Dr. Harun said the tree-planting activity was proposed to be carried out by all staff and students of UMS.

“It is estimated that the tree planted will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. Imagine with 300 trees planted, we can offset pollution caused by an individual in his or her lifetime,” he added.

At the event, Prof. Dr. Shahril also witnessed the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) between SPTA with Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Centre Ltd., G&G Management Consultant Pte. Ltd., and Sabahpuri Nursery SBH. Also present was the Dean of SPTA, Dr. Normah Awang Besar @ Raffie. – SS (fl)

Monday, 26 May- Final year creative art students exhibited 61 pieces of creative artwork for their work assessments during 'Adikarya'. This is a Final Year Project, for the Writing Students Programme, is also open for the public's eyes view.

Muhamad Faizal Mustapa, the programme director, explained this final year creative arts (majoring in writing) students exhibit their works to be evaluate, for the first time, to the publics.

This programme, which explore and display works which are poetry, novel and short story script, and also the students thesis will be assessed and acknowledged.

With 'Citra Seni Wajah Kita' theme, this programme gives us opportunities to show our artistic writing talents, and also bring forward literary work as arts of thinking to the public.

This two days programme, will also recognised the students piece of work in a few categories as an appreciation to the commitments and efforts of the students in showcasing their artwork. Some of the awards are 'Anugerah Penulisan Puisi Terbaik', 'Anugerah Penulisan Skrip Terbaik', 'Anugerah Penulisan Tesis Terbaik', 'Anugerah Penulisan Novel Terbaik',' Anugerah Penulisan Cerpen Terbaik', and 'Anugerah Pameran Terbaik'.

This programme is supported by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and Sabah National Department for Culture and Arts.
