Wahid-8935TUESDAY, 17th MARCH – Minister in Prime Minister’s Department, Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, recently visit Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) hatchery at Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB).

He was greeted by UMS Chairman Board of Directors, Tun Dato’ Seri Zaki Tun Azmi and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah.

Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid was also given a talk on the research process and operation management of the Hatchery by IPMB Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rossita Sapawi.

Later, he was accompanied by Tun Dato’ Seri Tun Zaki to see the breeding activities area and marine life research in the hatchery such as fish and prawn. –SS (JA)

Borneensis-8883TUESDAY, 17th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah committed to share their research findings and knowledge on environmental heritage with the community, particularly the younger generation.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said, UMS Friend of Borneensis was planned to promote environmental education in Sabah, especially in Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud.

“This programme can become the platform to expose the students about environment and the importance of nature,” he said during the closing ceremony UMS Friend of Borneensis 2015 Programme.

He added that the effectiveness of the environmental education programme, by using collection of biodiversity specimens, is important in order to create awareness to the younger generation to get involved in conserving the natures and doing research in the future.

“Through this programme, the students need to interact and work in a team even though they come from different schools,” he added.

This programme was organised by Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation (IBTP) with the Sabah Education Department collaboration. Also present was UMS Chairman of the Board of Directors, Tun Dato’ Seri Zaki Tun Azmi. -SS (JA)

MONDAY, 16th MARCH – Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) invites public participation in Seminar on Sungkai, which will be held end of April 2015.
 
According to FSSA Senior Lecturer cum the organiser secretariat, Awang Ahmad Mohd Yunus, the seminar will discuss Sungkai Wood potential as one of the alternative for Malaysian plantation.
 
“Interested participants are only required to pay RM250 for registration fee. Those who are interested, including scientists, lecturers, researchers and industries are welcome to participate in this seminar.”

Zallifah ShadanMONDAY, 16th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Bursar, the department holding the university responsibilities in financial matters, set to continue improving their services quality.

UMS Acting Bursar, Zallifah Shadan said that the culture of respect, teamwork and integrity are main aspects towards achieving the goal.

“Every individual must dare to change and come out from their current comfort zone. They must dare to grab the opportunity which may not come again repeatedly in the near future,” she said in Acting Bursar’s Message 2015, held recently.

She urged the staffs department to keep on improving in ensuring UMS financial sustainability to be preserved.

“We need each other to achieve our vision and mission. We must win as a team, trust each other, respect and understand each other, and we also need to enjoy working with each other,” she said advising the head sectors to open up opportunities and to believe in their subordinate.

With ‘Together, Driven Towards Transformation’ theme, the session also include launching of the Mentor Mentee programme as a medium for staffs to get professionals guidance, supports and help. This programme also helps to increase staffs development and proficiency.

For the record, there are a total of 152 staffs in the Bursar Department consisting staffs in the main campus and both two branch campuses in Labuan and Sandakan.-ZMD (JA)

pesta bubuk sabah labuanFRIDAY, 13 MARCH – Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali (pic) suggested that ‘Bubuk’ (shrimp) Festival be introduced in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan.

“Taking into account the abundance supply of bubuk in Sabah seasonally, being an iconic sea-based product and the much-awaited season, I am suggesting that it is time this bubuk season be included in our calendar as an official event in Sabah and Labuan,” he urged.

According to him, bubuk also known as ‘udang jerangau’ is a micro shrimp that only appear in certain seasons, in the month of January to March each year.

“Although the price of a kilogramme of bubuk during its season is only a few sen but the its processed by-products (shrimp-paste and cencaluk) bring lucrative returns to the producer,” he said, who is an expert in Maritime History.

He added, during bubuk season, the landing areas of this shrimp such as Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu, Papar, Kimanis, Kuala Penyu, Sipitang and Federal Territory of Labuan normally visited by fishermen and fish traders will be transformed into festival-like, swarmed by visitors who come to get fresh supply of bubuk.

As such, he said, through this festival not only it can elevate the food industry based on bubuk such as shrimp-paste and Cencaluk but it can also improve the socio-economic status of the community who were mainly fishermen, appreciate the maritime heritage of fishermen among the younger generation and create a new tourism product which could generate economy for the local communities.

“Its organisation is the same as other festival based on food such as the Sago Festival, Corn Festival, Coconut Festival, Cabbage Festival and the like, which are celebrated in Sabah every year,” he explained. – SS (fl)
