A total of 100 participants took part in the Kursus Sembelihan Halal Perdana 2024 (Halal Slaughter Course) organized by the Halal Services and Research Centre (PPPH) and the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The course was held in collaboration with the Sabah Islamic Religious Council's (MUIS) Halal Hub and the Sabah Veterinary Services Department.

The Dean of FSMP, Prof. Madya Ts. Dr. Hasmadi Mamat, emphasized that the course aimed to provide awareness, exposure, hands-on experience, and training on halal slaughter to the participants.

“The halal slaughter course covers several important aspects to ensure that the slaughter process is carried out according to the proper techniques and procedures, safely, and in compliance with religious and legal requirements,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude that the course proceeded smoothly as planned and hoped that it would continue in the coming years, with the goal of enhancing participants' knowledge and skills in halal slaughter techniques.

The invited speakers included officers from MUIS Halal Hub and the Sabah Veterinary Services Department. Dr. Hasmadi extended his appreciation to MUIS Halal Hub, QL Agroventures Sdn. Bhd., and Desa Plus Sdn. Bhd. for sponsoring the cows and chickens used for the practical slaughter sessions.

The ceremony for presenting souvenirs and certificates of appreciation for the program was officiated by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj. Mansor.

Two significant Letters of Intent (LOIs) between the Creative Advanced Machine Intelligence Research Centre, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (CAMIRCUMS), and esteemed partners were sealed recently.

The signing of document of agreements marks a pivotal moment in advancing technological solutions in various sectors in Sabah.

Held at the campus of UMS Faculty of Computing and Informatics, the event witnessed the collaboration between CAMIRC-UMS and MQuest Pte Ltd & MQuest Sdn Bhd, as well as with Allyssa Certification Sdn Bhd (ACSB).

The first LOI document signed was between CAMIRC-UMS and MQuest to confirm their interest to jointly enhance healthcare ICT solutions by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and Cybersecurity.

This collaboration aims to develop interoperable Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HISMM) models, catering to the healthcare industry9s evolving needs.

MQuests expertise in inventory management, smart scales, and Real-Time Location System (RTLS) technology complements this initiative, promising advancements in healthcare technology.

The second LOI between CAMIRC-UMS and ACSB focuses on the application of health-tech, HISMM, Agri-tech, and Aquatech-based ICT solutions.

By integrating Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and Cybersecurity technologies, the partnership aims to develop Global Carbon Infrastructure in the BIMP-EAGA Region and innovative solutions for renewable energy.

Additionally, the collaboration seeks to initiate research and development proposals to secure research funds, fostering advancements in various sectors.

The LOI ceremony was attended by key delegates, including Dr Raymond Alfred, Mr Rayyan Radzwill Abdullah and Mr Lim Boon Seng, along with Associate Professor Ts. Dr Mohd Hanafi Ahmad Hijazi and Professor Ts. Dr Rayner Alfred.

ACSBs services encompass project and programme development related to Green and Blue Economy, Climate & Energy, Food & Nature-Tourism, and People-Community, aligning with the collaborative objectives outlined in the LOIs.

The commitments outlined in the LOIs are poised to bring about positive impacts in the future for all parties involved.

The collaboration signifies a significant step towards strengthening partnerships between local and international industries and a Malaysian institution in the realms of Green and Blue Economy, renewable energy and healthcare.

The collaboration is expected to support initiatives such as the Sabah Maju Jaya programme and BIMP-EAGA, fostering innovation and progress in these vital sectors.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is exploring opportunities for collaboration in food science and technology to address issues related to food security in Borneo.

Its representatives discussed such collaborations during a recent visit to Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (SASM).

UMS Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FFSN) dean Associate Prof Dr Hasmadi Mamat said the collaboration will be coordinated by UMS’ Food Safety Research Laboratory and UTB’s Centre for Research on AgriFood Science and Technology (CrAFT) to conduct related research.

In addition, both parties were keen on a proposal to establish student and staff mobility programmes between the universities.

 

"A comprehensive discussion on this will be conducted and (the structure) refined soon," he said on Wednesday (May 22), adding that the visit was also conducted to fulfil international accreditation requirements set by the Institute of Food Science (IFT) and the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IuFOST).

Meanwhile, UTB deputy vice-chancellor (academic) Dr Ena Kartina Abd Rahman said the collaboration is necessary to address critical issues of food security.

"In line with the memorandum of understanding signed between UTB and UMS in 2020, cooperation in food safety and nutrition is important to assist the community, especially in the Borneo region," she said.

 

A group of 13 final year Aquaculture Degree Program students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) have embarked on a unique industrial training programme, Student Aquaculture Industry Training Oversea (SAITO) which allow them to have opportunity to industry training in Japan.

This is 21st batch of group of students dispatched by the the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) of UMS and Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI), these students are set to gain hands-on experience in aquaculture, a sector vital to Malaysia's food security and economic growth.

The director of BMRI UMS, Associate Professor Dr. Faihanna Ching Abdullah said she is eager to witness the valuable experiences that students will bring back to UMS enriching aquaculture industry.

“Began on the 11th of May until 29th of July 2024, the students placed at renowned aquaculture facilities including the Kindai University, Nagasaka Eel Farm, Olive Suissan, and Tanoura Fisheries Cooperative.

“These facilities are known for their success in aquaculture and aquaculture research institute will provide the students with valuable hands-on experience in various aquaculture methods and emerging technologies,” she said.

Additionally, Dean of Faculty of Science and Natural Resources, Prof Jualang Azlan Gansau highlighted the importance of this training initiative, affirming UMS takes great pride in offering this distinctive training program, which holds immense significance for both students and the industry.

“Through this program, the main objective is to enhance students’ practical skills and knowledge in the field of aquaculture while immersing ourselves in Japanese culture.

“Experiencing different cultures and working in diverse environments not only broadens their horizons but also helps them develop as individuals and professionals,” he said.

The leader of UMS students participating in the SAITO, Eric Choong Khai Hang, represents the whole team of members to express their gratitude for the opportunity provided by FSSA and BMRI of UMS.

“While we are feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness, we believe that our hard work as a team has prepared us well for this opportunity. We are determined to represent UMS proudly and will do our utmost to make the most of this experience.

“Also, we are excited about the opportunity to explore Japan's rich cultural heritage, traditions, and professional ethics. Moreover, we hope that our positive experience will encourage other students to pursue similar international internship opportunities,” he said.
