datuk rasmi klinik warga sandakanFRIDAY, 20th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sandakan Branch Campus students and staffs now are able to receive medical treatment in-campus after the officiating ceremony of the Health Centre establishment, yesterday.
 
The officiating ceremony was completed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.
 
Earlier in his speech, Datuk Harun said that the opening of the clinic is significant, especially to the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture (FPL) community, the only faculty in Sandakan branch campus.
 
“This is a beginning and also a good effort in ensuring the students health care are covered. Congratulation to Student Affairs Department and Health Centre and also to every party involved in ensuring the success of Sandakan Campus Health Centre to operate,” he said.
 
According to him, the clinic will provide students and staff with minor illness with out-patient treatments.
 
He also added that distance between FPL to town and health care centre is quite far. Thus, this in-campus clinic will save time and cost for receiving treatment.
 
“Health Centres in both UMS Kota Kinabalu and Labuan have been operating for quite some time now. FPL was not left behind by the operation of this Health Centre in ensuring the community campus welfare are prioritize by university management,” added Datuk Harun.
 
The clinic operation was also supported by staffs from Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan. -SS-

Geran PenyelidikanFRIDAY, 20th MARCH – BIMP–EAGA Unit for Tourism Development (BE-UTD), Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FPEP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) invites all academicians to participate in ‘Winning Research Grant’ seminar.

Contacted by Media, Head of BE-UTD, Kamarul Mizal Marzuki said that the seminar will be held on 30th March 2015 from 9.00 am until 12.00 noon.

“This seminar is only open to 30 earliest participants registered. The dateline for registration will be on 25th March 2015,” he added.

He also added that the seminar will explained to the participants on how to produce a well written proposal for research grant.

“This seminar will be delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jennifer Chan Kim Lian and will be held at FPEP,” he added more.

Prog kecemerlangan pelajarFRIDAY, 20th MARCH - A total of 185 Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) participated in a Student Excellence Programme organized by the faculty. The programme was held at UMS Library Auditorium recently.

According to FSSA Deputy Dean of Academic and International Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Bade, the programme was aimed to increase the students’ motivations, and for them to be competitive in facing test and challenges ahead. This is also a way for them to prepare for their employment in the future.

“These selected students, from fourteen programmes in FSSA, are exposed to various knowledge and experience in UMS efforts to produce students with high graduate employability rate when they graduated,” he said while representing FSSA Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baba Musta during the officiating ceremony.

The one-day programme was conducted by a special invited speaker, Dr. Hajah Ananglangka Mad Kassim.

The speaker presented topics including talks on increasing academic performance.

Dolfin
THURSDAY, 19th MARCH – A dolphin, believed to be the Risso Dolphin species, was found at Kampung Teluk Layang waters, Likas by two fishermen in the nearby waters around 6.00 am this morning.

Three metres in length, the dolphin was then ushered to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Out-Door Development Centre (ODEC) by a group of rescuer from Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) and Sabah Wildlife Department after they were contacted by the villagers.

According to UMS BMRI postgraduate student, Ian Lavi Jackery, the dolphin weighs 300 kilograms have minor injuries on the head and body.

Together with a group of security team, he informed that the dolphin had received few treatments from Wildlife Department and still under their examination and observation.

Another wildlife veterinary on the scene, Dr. Sandy Ling also informed that the dolphin was potentially infected.

“We will be giving whichever helps and treatments needed,” he said while adding that it is still early to know the reason why the dolphin was stranded. -ZMD (JA)

MOU IPMB 1WEDNESDAY, 18th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues their efforts in developing research in marine areas by signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with both local and international institutions.

The latest, UMS Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) signed three memorandums which will aid in providing structured and committed approach to working more closely together in a smart partnership arrangement in the areas of marine science and aquaculture.

The three institutions are National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), Universitas Borneo Tarakan (UBT) and Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC), Philippines.

BMRI Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rossita Shapawi, said that through these MoUs will enable UMS to exchange knowledge and experience with better learning outcomes and also spearheading intellectual development.

At the MoUs signing ceremony, UMS was represented by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah and Acting Registrar, No’man Hj. Ahmad.

NTOU was represented by their President, Prof. Dr. Ching-Fong Chang and Director of International Affairs Office of NTOU, Dr. Yew-Hu Chien, while UBT was represented by the Rector, Dr. Bambang Widigdo, and Deputy Rector Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Ir. Setyo Pertiwi.

SEAFDEC/AQD was represented by Office of the Chief, Dr. Felix G. Ayson. –ZMD (JA)
