Welcome to Unit for Primate Studies BORNEO homepage

The Unit for Primate Studies Borneo, or referred only to as UPS-Borneo for short, is a research unit devoted to primatological research in Sabah. It is part of the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

Background on the establishment of the UPS-Borneo

Non-human primate species are facing various threats worldwide and Borneo is no exception. There are 13 species of non-human primates on Borneo Island, of which 10 species are found in the Malaysian state of Sabah in the north of Borneo.

Based on the IUCN’s criteria for globally threatened species, three (3) of the non-human primates in Sabah are regarded as “Endangered” (Orang utan, Pongo pygmaeus; Proboscis monkey, Nasalis larvatus; Bornean gibbon, Hylobates muelleri), four (4) as “Vulnerable” (Slow loris, Nycticebus caucang; Western tarsier, Tarsius bancanus; Hose’s langur or grey leaf monkey, Presbytis hosei; Pig-tailed macaque, Macaca nemestrina) and one (1) “Near Threatened” (Silver langur, Trachypithecus cristatus). Although the remaining two (2) species are regarded as “Least Concern” (Maroon langur or Red leaf monkey, Presbytis rubicunda; Long-tailed macaque, Macaca fascicularis), the global trends of population size of these species are declining.

In order to facilitate and progress the conservation management of populations of all non-human primate species in Sabah, there is an urgent need for information such as population size and distribution, basic biology and ecology, population genetics, as well as information on the natural ecosystems and human-non-human primates interactions. With the final aim to promote the conservation of all non-human primate species in the wild in Sabah and to provide useful data for the conservation management of these animals, the Unit for Primate Studies-Borneo has been established on 1st June 2007.

 About Us

The Food Safety and Quality Unit (FSQ Unit) was developed under the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) on 19 September 2013 and its establishment was certified through UMS 55th Board Meeting Bil. 2/2013.

The main direction of this unit is to provide SERVICES and EXPERTISE to food producers and those who are competent in food industry

This unit acts as a “One-Stop Reference Centre” for everything food and the main link between clients and all FSMP academic staff who are experts in the field of Food Science, Dietary, Food Technology, Food Bioprocessing and qualified Food Service.

This unit provides services such as training, research and consultancy for food industrialists in Sabah, and at community level generally. The expected long-term impact of this unit is to give benefit to the development of food industry in Sabah and an increase in knowledge, practice and food preparation with quality.

The Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) was established in January 2002 to function as a Center of Excellence in the field of Biotechnology at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). The establishment of BRI is in tandem with the nation's efforts to promote research and development in biological or life sciences for the improvement of the quality of human life in relations to medicine, food, agricultural science and environmental protection. The main functions of the Institute are:

  • To promote research and postgraduate training through a demand-driven education programme in the field of biotechnology
  • To undertake strategic biotechnology research in key areas relevant to the geographical location of Universiti Malaysia Sabah
  • To serve as a facility housing high-end analytical equipment
  • To serve as a biotechnology hub for Sabah and its surrounding regions
  • To develop corporate partnerships to help drive the nation's biotechnology industry
  • To create and encourage an entrepreneurial culture among UMS researchers in the commercialisation of biotechnology R&D outputs
  • To support and contribute to the local and national bio-industries

VISION

The Biotechnology Research Institute strives to be a world class research center in the field of biotechnology.

MISSION

To promote research and development in biological or life sciences through market-driven educational programmes and strategic research.

About Us

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was established on November 24th, 1994. ITBC was founded in 1996. With the coordinating assistance of the Institute, local and international scientists can better explore the diverse terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems of the tropics, especially Sabah.

  • To be a research and reference centre in the field of tropical biology and conservation,
  • To be a reference point for local biodiversity; to aid in management and environment impact assessments,
  • To carry out studies on tropical rainforests and freshwater ecosystems as well as the conservation of these habitats and their inhabitants,
  • To provide well-trained and skilled manpower in the fields of tropical biology and conservation through long and short-term research / training programmes and postgraduate supervision,
  • To disseminate biodiversity knowledge by organizing conferences and workshops.

The founding head of the Tropical Biology and Conservation Unit is Prof. Datin Dr. Maryati Mohamed whose responsibilities were to establish and build up a fully competent Unit then (now the Institute). Prof. Datin Dr. Maryati Mohamed, an insects taxonomist by training, started several of the basic components of the Institute including the BORNEENSIS Reference Collection Centre, and helped to train many of the university's first and earliest graduates in science.

About Us

Universiti Malaysia Sabah initiated research in marine science and aquaculture by establishing a specialized research unit in the year 1995, in the first phase of its development. This reflected the priority given by the University to these subjects in response to the needs of the state of Sabah and the country, and their growing importance in a global perspective.

After recruiting the critical mass of experts, developing infrastructure and conducting a performance audit, Universiti Malaysia Sabah decided to upgrade this research unit in the year 2000 to the status of a fully-fledged Centre of Excellence and named it ‘Borneo Marine Research Institute’. Since then the Institute has made progressive strides in research and development in various areas within the scope of its theme which is ‘Conservation and Sustainable Development of Marine Resources’.

Selection of this theme was motivated by the need for innovative and relevant research oriented towards preservation of marine ecosystem for the services it provides and for undertaking advance research on topics in sustainable aquaculture. BMRI has significantly contributed to the development of human resources in these fields, provided the benefit of its expertise to many agencies and implemented several programs of direct relevance to the society in addition to generating new knowledge and technology.

Mission, Vision & Motto
