UMS to Be Model in Environmental Conservation: Vice-Chancellor

green officeMONDAY, 22 JULYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is ready to implement all values and elements relating to utility savings and electronic waste management in achieving its wish as a model leader in environmental conservation among all higher learning institutions (IPT) in Malaysia. UMS Vice-Chancellor said this today when officiating at the ‘Green Office Awareness’ Campaign organised by the Management Centre of this EcoCampus University.

According to Datuk Harun, UMS’ main aim is to keep the greens based on UMS staff and students’ approach on saving utility at their work place. He added that it should be the university’s responsibility as an IPT to always be the reference centre in increasing educational awareness thus doubling awareness to UMS staff and students including the community on the importance of environmental conservation.

In enjoying the economy’s development, the use of modern technology at the office such as air-conditioners, modern office equipment, and excessive electricity usage are the main contributors to global warming, air and water pollution. Through the Green Office Awareness, it is hoped that UMS staff and students would have a change of attitude that could help in conserving energy at the work place.

“Through this change of attitude, it is hoped that it would help in reducing daily operation costs in energy use in the campus in line with sustainable environment and would be an example towards environment conservation,” he urged.

Thus, he urged all UMS staff and students to renew their commitment in an effort towards sustainable environment and remain as a legacy and for our future generation, thus achieving UMS’ objective to be an EcoCampus.

A talk relating to EcoCampus was also held which was presented by guest lecturers; Dr. Irina Zen Safitri, Dr. Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad and Sitti Nursyafa Bakri. Also present were the Director of EcoCampus Management Centre, Dr. Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pengiran Bagul; Head Librarian cum Green Community Committee, Dayang Rukiah Awang Amit and the Chairman of Environmental Management System Committee, Dr. Bonaventure Vun Leong Wan. – FL
