Background
Unit for Orchid Studies (UOS) was established on July, 1st 2007 to promote research, development and conservation of orchids by increasing knowledge and scientific expertise. UOS is part of the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah. UOS aims to build an electronic data base and a collection centre for orchids in Sabah and provides information, facilities and expertise to support the study of orchids. The output of the research effort will include:
- Academic publications
- Easy-to-access database
- Orchid seedlings from tissue culture
Objectives
To fulfil the needs of orchids research through those objectives:
- Become a research centre that focuses on orchid conservation in Sabah through research in biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology, population genetics and micropropagation
- Build an ex-situ orchid conservation area in UMS
- Develop a network for orchid research in partnership with other institutes and agencies in Sabah
- To support economic development in Sabah through R&D and transfer of UMS expertise to local farmers
