Announcement From: Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Of UMS

 

Biosafety Act 2007

 

  1. On behalf of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) of UMS, addressing all researchers (principal investigators) conducting research activities involving Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) or Living Modified Organism (LMO) at UMS especially those related to modern Biotechnology.

 

  1. IBC of UMS has been established specifically (but not limited) to evaluate all projects involving LMO/GMO conducted at university that fall outside of the exemptions that are still active or currently being planned to be conducted.

 

  1. Thus, a google form has been developed by IBC, UMS and researchers must first register the activities involving the production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or living modified organisms (LMOs) and IBC, UMS will go through the registered activities.   1. Principal investigators (PIs) will immediately inform and be assisted by IBC, UMS if the registered activity requires completing the relevant forms.

 

  1. The principal investigators (PIs) are to submit (upload) the relevant forms to IBC to be evaluated which in turn will be submitted to National Biosafety Board (NBB) under the Biosafety Department, Ministry of Environment and Water for approval.

  1. Under the Malaysian Biosafety Act 2007 (Act 678) the following could be subjected to the principle investigator (PI) and Institution failing to comply with the Act:
  2. Penalties to individuals of up to RM250k and/or imprisonment of not exceeding 5 years (Section 26 part a).
  3. Penalties to a body corporate (in this case, UMS) of a fine not exceeding RM500k (Section 26 part b)
  • Sealing off and closing of the premises (section 44).
