English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) Course Encourages Students to Excel in Language Use as Professionals

FRIDAY, 19 AUGUST – The Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to impart fundamental language skills to students of UMS, in line with Shift 1 of the Malaysia Education Blueprint (Higher Education) - to have ‘Holistic Entrepreneurial and Balanced Graduates’ that encompassed English and Communication Skills, Curriculum Design, and Employability.

PPIB, through its English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) course under the English Language Cluster conducted a Language Use in the Profession workshop for its second year students undertaking this compulsory subject, as part of the syllabus.

More than 150 students obtained invaluable  experience at the two-hour workshop that not only highlighted on language use as professionals but also touched on the importance of top-to-toe image and appearance including tips on choosing the right attitude and attire befitting job interviews and the working environment.

“The workshop is very beneficial and useful where it focuses on dress code and more that add value to our knowledge.

“The session also included the do’s and don’t’s during interview for us to be better prepared and be more confident”, said Muhammad Firdaus Syarifuddin, a second year student taking Bachelor of Economics (Hons.) (Planning and Development Economics) under the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, UMS.

PPIB strives to provide relevant English language courses to undergraduates at UMS. The EOP course was specifically designed with the aim of equipping students to meet the English language needs and demands at the workplace.  Students also undergo simulated job interviews as part of the curriculum, in addition to conducting simulated meetings, negotiations, and presentations in English.
