WEDNESDAY, 16 MARCH – 47 Year Two Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sports Science students attended the Adobe Photoshop Workshop organised by Sports Science students of UMS.

According to Sports Science lecturer, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin, the workshop aimed to provide knowledge and skills to participants in the use of Photoshop especially for editing purposes.

“I hope the participants could expand their creativity in designing and implement what they have learned in the next issue of their bulletin,” he said when met during the workshop.

He explained that Adobe Photoshop would help in improving the learning and information delivery system to be more attractive, especially in the field of advertising, posters and banners.

“Photoshop is also multi-functional and could help sports science students improve their research report with better pictures and graphs that are clearer and easy to understand,” he added.

The one-day workshop was conducted by the Graphic Designer of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW), Ak Ab Hashim Pg Ab Ghani, using demonstrations, discussions and practical training. – (fl)

TUESDAY, 15 MARCH – The K-Shopped and KopieSatu franchise will make its way to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) campus and this would give an opportunity for students to experience business acumen.

Chairman of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin said, FAMA had allocated a total of RM75,000 to set up K-Shoppe, which would be built in the near future under the Agricultural Graduate Entrepreneurship Club (MyAgrosis) UMS.

“The running of business would be conducted by UMS students, and this effort would not only increase their knowledge in the field of business, but also provide opportunities for students to use their discretion in improving their skills.

“K-Shoppe is a shop selling essentials and could bring profits for both students and the university,” he disclosed.

He said this at a press conference at the Entrepreneur Motivational Talk and the launching of the MyAgrosis Club UMS at Dewan Bankuasi, UMS recently.

He also explained that KopieSatu franchise would be built after the establishment of K-Shoppe store.

According to him, KopieSatu is a local coffee shop drinks that have branches in universities.

“After they graduate, those who want to do the KopieSatu business will be assisted by FAMA,” he said.

At the ceremony, Tan Sri Badruddin also officiated MyBestBuy at the parking lot of the Student Affairs Department UMS.

TUESDAY, 15 MARCH – Seven Faculty of Engineering (FKJ) Universiti Malaysia Sabah students, received the Repsol 2015 scholarship organised by Talisman Malaysia (Ltd).

The award was presented by Asset Manager of Talisman Malaysia (Ltd) Sabah, Duncan Smart at a hotel in Kota Kinabalu, recently.

According to Duncan, the scholarship was one of the educational and developmental programmes on human capital which was central to Repsol’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

“Our company will continue its efforts to increase students’ interest in learning that are related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),” he said.

He explained that Repsol  scholarship would provide financial assistance of between RM30,000 and RM35,000 for each course including tuition fees, living allowance and purchase of computer.

“The programme also provide opportunities for industry training for these students under Repsol scholarship,” Duncan added.

UMS is one of four universities involved in the Repsol scholarship programme, the other three are Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). – (fl)

MONDAY, 14 MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to play a role as a centre of higher learning through the sharing of knowledge and research studies with the public.

Recently, UMS through the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC) organised the UMS Borneensis Friends 2016 Programme involving 30 students from five secondary schools in Sabah.

According to the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, the three-day programme was aimed to educate and raise the awareness among Malaysians on our natural heritage.

“The programme, which is implemented using biodiversity specimen collection is important to motivate the young to engage in nature conservation and research in the future,” he said when officiating the closing of the programme.

He said, Sabah was famous as the world’s major centre for biodiversity, having the largest conservation area of over 400,000 hectares.

“Thus, ITBC UMS as the university’s centre of excellence bears the responsibility to highlight the strength of studies in the field of biodiversity and the effectiveness of environmental education for the benefit of the local and international community,” Datuk Harun added.

The five schools involved in this programme are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Likas, SMK Tebobon, SM St. Michael, SM All Saints and SMK Arshad.

Also present at the ceremony were Chairman of UMS Board of Directors, Tun Zaki Tun Azmi; State Education Director, Datuk Jame Alip and ITBC Director, Professor Dr. Charles Vairappan. – (fl)

 

FRIDAY, 11 MARCH - Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) being an ecocampus university, continues to promote fitness and healthy lifestyle amongst its campus community.

In support of this, the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) has turned part of its ground floor into a gymnasium (gym) complete with shower and toilets for its gym users and has been in operation since July 2013.

According to FPP Youth and Sports Officer, Eeza Zainal, the gym also offers other arrangements such as fitness programmes, rehabilitation programme, personal trainer and bicycles for rent.

“Our gym is open to students and staff including outsiders, with low chargeable rates,” she said, referring to the separate fees set for members and walk-in users of the gym, as well as the service of a personal trainer.

The gym called Rehab & Fitness Centre is open on weekdays from 6.00 am – 10.00 pm, Saturdays from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm and close on Sundays and public holidays.

It was initially opened to cater to the needs of the Graduate Teachers Programme and Sports Science Programme of FPP, UMS.

Their upcoming activity is a ‘Junior Camp 2016’, which will be held from 18-20 March 2016.  This camp is open to children between 6-12 years old.  The package includes a T-shirt, meals and a certificate for each participant.
