Ustaz Razali SaibinWEDNESDAY, 17 JUNE – Muslims are advised to abandon any wasteful acts that may reduce in them getting spiritual reward, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

In an interview with the Senior Islamic Welfare Officer of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Islamic Centre (PIUMS), Ustaz Razali Saibin, he said it was a loss for a Muslim who fasts but does not abandon his wasteful and useless acts.

“During this fasting month, Allah S.W.T. urges us to practice abstinence..not only on food and drinks but also in what we say lest we hurt others with our words,” he said.

The interview was conducted to enlighten others on the video produced by Media and Citra Division UMS regarding some doubts on the law of fasting.

“Let’s make this fasting a time to educate ourselves to practice righteousness and improve our ibadah,” he added.

WEDNESDAY, 17 JUNE – Concerned about the fate of victims of the earthquake tragedy which happened on 5 June, a group of academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently visited the families of the affected at Kampung Kiau Taburi, Kota Belud.

With the collaboration of the Malaysian Counsellor Board, the programme named Sharing Hope was aimed to provide counseling to the families of the victims who are still traumatised and scarred by the disaster.

According to the head of the programme, Habibie Ibrahim, the group also donated financial assistance which was handed over directly to the said villagers.

“The counselling service involving FPP Social Work Club is seen to be very timely to inspire those affected to continue with their daily lives,” she said.

Also lending their services were a group of students under the Master of Counselling Psychology in Substance Abuse (SPADA). – SM (fl)

ocean day2015TUESDAY, 16 JUNE – With the current rapid development of innovation technology and green technology, aquaculture industry should pay attention to sustainable aquaculture activities by combining traditional practices and modern development.

This is because sustainable aquaculture activities could be the key to the issues of demands for fisheries resources and seafood which continues to show improvement.

This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Yahya Hussein in a speech during the official opening of World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Day at ODEC Beach, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

His speech was delivered by his deputy, Datuk Hj. Sairin Karno.

Datuk Seri Yahya said, Malaysia has the strength to play a role in aquaculture based on the wealth of its marine resources, the importance of sharing scientific and academic synergies with the fishing communities.

“The government fully supports the efforts undertaken by UMS,” he said, adding that there were many aspects in the field of aquaculture that required improvement on scientific knowledge, environmentally friendly technologies and innovative approaches to achieve the production of sustainable seafood.

He added, the practice in aquaculture activities in the 21st century should move towards a more sustainable future through innovative thinking and the exchange of knowledge among scientists, entrepreneurs and fish farmers.

The event also saw the launching of Friends of Aquaculture UMS, which involves 12 local aquaculture entrepreneurs as one of the earliest partners. – MA (fl)

18AGM12.06.15 1TUESDAY, 16 JUNE – The Housewives and Women’s Club (KESUMBA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently held their 18th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Gallery, Chancellery Building.

The AGM chaired by Associate Professor Dr. Arsiah Bahron dissolved the old line-up of Head Bureau Members and called on the nomination of its new line-up for the 2015/2017 session.

Wife of the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Datin Baidah Ibrahim automatically assumed the post of Club President thus giving her the mandate to nominate the Deputy Vice-President, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer of the club.

The nominated members were Roha Asmara who assumed the post of Deputy Vice-President whilst Norti Sirin was re-appointed as the Honorary Secretary and Silawati @ Ken Silawati Khamis was re-appointed as Honorary Treasurer.

The meeting also saw the appointment of Hayati Salleh Baihaki, wife of the Director of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (KAL) as the President of KESUMBA for UMSKAL.

Six members were voted to fill in the vacant posts as Heads of Bureau, which will be allotted during their first meeting.

They were Harniwaty Ahmad Ali, Stella @ Nurul Martini Gontol, Siti Khadizah Yaakub, Siti Aysha Rainawaty Abd Rashid, Erna Jefren and Feria Lee.

The bureau were Education and Learning, Economy and Consumerism, Religious and Welfare, Arts and Culture, Information and Relations, including Sports, Social and Recreation. – FL

Prof felix banjir lumpurTUESDAY, 16 JUNE – Residents staying near Mount Kinabalu are urged to make a report if they saw nearby rivers blocked by large stones and wood chips.

According to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) lecturer of Geology, Professor Dr. Felix Tongkul, this compound has the potential to get stuck in narrow river valleys and areas where there is a bridge that would prevent the flow of water.

“As I said before, if it happens, water and mud will get stagnant at the river mouth and will form a temporary dam…this is very dangerous if the dam bursts, more dangerous than what had happened (Saturday evening),” he told UMS Media.

About 4.00 pm yesterday, the study by the Director of Research and Innovation Centre UMS last week came true when the much dreaded mud slides hit Ulu Sungai Kadamaian and Sungai Mesilau.

In this regard, Professor Felix advised residents living along the rivers in the area to always take precautionary measures. – SS (fl)
