WEDNESDAY, 13 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) athletes are undergoing intensive training in preparation for the Malaysian University Sports Council Championship (MASUM) 2015 held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in July.
According to UMS Youth and Sports Officer, Charles Thomas, he said among the potential medal haul were in taekwondo, karate, lawn bowl, pentaque, silat and swimming.
“To achieve the goals and targets for the tournament in MASUM championship this time, all athletes have been undergoing intensive training individually or with their team,” he said.
For karate athletes, Mathavan a/l Vickneswaran, he intended to make up for his defeat at the semi final in the men’s Kumite category under 75 kg at the same tournament last year.
Mathavan had previously won gold at the MASUM championship 2013 and Higher Education Institutions (SUKIPT) 2014 which was held at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA).
All of the athletes who will compete in the 2015 MASUM are determined to improve their performances and bringing home medals for the university. – ZMD (fl)

TUESDAY, 12 MAY – A total of 500 students participated in the ‘High Value Health’ programme organised by the Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) Tun Mustapha Residential College Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Executive Council (Exco) for Culture and Arts, recently.
According to the director of the programme, Risimaran Subramaniyam; the event, held for the first time was to ensure that students from the Tun Mustapha Residential College maintain a high level of health besides doing charity through blood donation.
“We were targeting only about 80 students, but we have a total of 200 students who donated and this is a very encouraging number,” he told UMS Media.
In the meantime, the Tun Mustapha college principal, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin said, the success of this blood donation campaign proved that the students fully supported the effort in improving the health of those in the campus.
“Programme like this should be continued in future as the result benefits not only the campus community but also the public,” he said, and who also donated blood and underwent health checks.
The programme managed to collect about 100 bags of blood donated, and were sent to the Kudat Hospital Blood Bank. – ZMD (fl)

TUESDAY, 12 MAY – Science Education Postgraduate Programme, Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will organise a Science Technology Engineering and Mathematic Education (STEM) Rural School Community at SMK Badin, Tuaran on Saturday.Programme supervisor, Dr. Siew Nyet Moi @ Sopiah Abdullah said, the programme was a model and system that could help students interested in science and mathematics that would be the basis in mastering Science and Technology Engineering field.
“The programme was participated by 19 students of the Master of Science Education (MES Group 1) and 62 Form 4 students of Pure Science stream at SMK Badin,” she said in a media statement.
She said, the MES 1 Master students would become steering committee and act as facilitator during the programme.
He said that in line with the course of Science, Technology and Society, the programme was designed for Postgraduate students to reach out to the community in addition to see, explore and evaluate for themselves the concept and application of science among students in rural schools.
“This programme aims to encourage the proliferation of students' creativity and problem solving skills. The impact would be that students not only build their confidence, but also encouragement for them to choose STEM for their career and the field of study that they like,” added Dr. Siew.
Themed ‘Creating Young Inventors’, the closing ceremony was officiated by the Head of Science Unit, Tuaran District Education Office, Winnie Ulut. – SS (fl)

TUESDAY, 12 MAY – A programme involving Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and several government agencies with the Papar community, especially residents of Kampung Seberang Benoni, Papar was well received by the community around Papar.
Organised by the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB) UMS for the third consecutive time, the same programme was conducted at Kampung Lohan, Ranau and As-Sakinah Orphanage at Putatan the year before.
The programme named ‘A Day With Benoni Community Leader and Community’ was officiated by the Assemblyman of N22 Pantai Manis, Datuk Haji Abdul Rahim Ismail.
In his opening speech, he was proud to see UMS community consisted of various professions and academia to contribute to the field of local communities, thus continuing the legacy of community development through education.
He stressed the importance of education as a potent weapon to deal with the problem of poverty amongst the people of the state.
“Sabah used to have a relatively high level of poverty, and UMS was subsequently established to provide higher education opportunities to the local communities.
“Today, many Sabahans have not only education at Bachelor level but also Masters and Doctorate level covering various fields, which goes to show that education can change the fate of our local children,” he said.
The one-day programme at the Multipurpose Hall of Kampung Seberang Benoni, Papar saw many activities held such as educational talk and English language motivational talk, GST briefing by representatives of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs (KPDNKK), as well as a talk by the Malaysian Royal Police. – MA (fl)

MONDAY, 11 MAY – If you are having problems in reducing your body weight, having erratic periods or prolonged acne problems, it could be due to a disorder called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).According to the Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Associate Professor Dr. Helen Lasimbang, the risks of not having these symptoms treated would be a few combination of problems including abnormal increase in hair growth, infertility and could also lead to hypertension and diabetes.
“An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (O&G) will examine and confirm on the spot the diagnostic before establishing further treatment,” she said when contacted by UMS Media today.
She said that they were trying a new remedy for PCOS using a local herb, ‘kacip fatimah’ (labisa pumila) for those who will undergo further treatment.
“Those who want to be tested must make an appointment with UMS Polyclinic, Kingfisher by calling Donna or Haryanty at 088-435281,” Dr. Helen added, citing that PCOS affected five to 10 percent of the female population.
All women above the age of 18 are encouraged to go for the test. – FL
