THURSDAY, 12 MARCH – For two years in a row, once again the combined forces of the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA), Insitute for Tropical Biological and Conservation (ITBC), Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB), Biotechnology Research Institute (IPB) and Science and Technology Preparatory Centre (PPST) were awarded the Best Charity Project in conjunction with Maulidur Rasul UMS level for 2015.
The group called Al-Jawwad had conducted two community programmes with the local community of Kota Belud and Pitas, Sabah.
The first project, clean water supply in Kampung (Kg) Sarang Kota Belud saw the group provided piping system and clean water storage tanks from underground water resources.
UMS staff and the residents joined forces and worked together for four days to provide those basic needs.
Three clean water storage tanks are now available at Masjid Kg. Sarang for their convenience and comfort for the purpose of ablution.
Meanwhile, the second programme saw the delivery of post-flood relief assistance at Kg. Pengkalan Mengkapon, Pitas.
It was to help 77 families in the village who were affected by the recent floods.
The programme, which also had Beras Nasional (BERNAS) donating 850 kilogrammes of rice, also donated other basic needs and clothing collected from staff of the group in Al-Jawwad.
In addition, the village mosque loudspeaker system was upgraded and was contributed by MyOSP (M) Sdn. Bhd.
A total of 13 four-wheel drive vehicles belonging to staff of the group were used to transport all material aid and donations that was delivered at the ceremony which was attended by more than 200 villagers. – SS (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 11 MARCH – “History cannot be changed, but can be thought of rationally for the security and development of the country.”Those were the words of former Director of State Archives, Datuk Datu Tigabelas Datuk Zainal Abidin when delivering his presentation on Socio-Cultural Community of Sabah: in the Malaysian Cultural History Corpus Context.
He was touching on some issues related to the formation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963, in his presentation.
He said, based on facts recorded during his tenure at the State Archives for 37 years, the notion that some parties claimed the formation of Malaysia was composed of a combination of four countries was less than accurate.
It was because, during that period, Sabah and Sarawak had not been confirmed as a country and were still under the rule of the British Governor.
“The British Government formed Malaysia with Malaya and Singapore, each of which had a Prime Minister at the time.
“With regard to the date of 31 August 1963 purportedly claimed by many as the actual date Sabah gained its independence was actually the appointment of Sabah’s Chief Minister, the same for Sarawak on 22 July 1963 in a function appointing the same,” he added.
At the time, the Cabinet of Sabah had yet to be formed, which confirmed the fact that Sabah and Sarawak had yet to become a country at that time.
“But I agree that the formation of Malaysia in 1963 consists of four entities, namely Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and the Federation of Malaya,” he explained.

WEDNESDAY, 11 MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (KAL) student, Daniel Lau Lee Nguong won third place in the Sabah Motivator Competition held at the Auditorium, Multimedia and Communication Technology Department (JTMK), UMS Kota Kinabalu, recently.Daniel (pic), a third year student of the Faculty of International Finance Labuan (FKAL) who touched on ‘Action Speaks Louder Than Words’ took home cash prize of RM150, hamper and trophy.
Hailed from Sibu, Sarawak, he will represent UMS at the national level at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Serdang, scheduled to be held in April 2015.
Eight other UMSKAL students who participated took home consolation prize.
The competition organised by the Counseling and Career Guidance Division UMS was participated by 30 participants representing the Public University (UA) and Private College of UMS Kota Kinabalu, UMSKAL, Yayasan Sabah College (KYS) and Asian Tourism International College. – SS (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 11 MARCH – The existence of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) as the only public university (UA) in the state has opened many opportunities to improve the lives of its community.According to UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah, UMS supported a large role at national level in the field of education for the sake of moving towards universal development.
“To move forward, we need an efficient education, which is able to change the thinking (public) towards being more positive and constructive,” he said.
He added that educators need to know the role and direction of the education field as contained in the education philosophy.
Since its inception in 1994, UMS has opened up opportunities for employment, business, education and research as well as community programmes and other related programmes.
“The stability of the country must be upheld together. Malaysia is our homeland, this is where our rice-bowl is, life and raising a family,” he said, describing that racial unity was key to the success of the country.
He was speaking at the National Development Seminar Series 2, 2015 organised by the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) at Dewan Resital UMS.

TUESDAY, 10 MARCH – After a five-day camp in the village of Chinta Mata Tenom, 35 Rakan Muda Secretariat Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Melaka Multimedia Universiti (MMU) ended their ‘Ngabas Borneo 2015’ programme successfully.
For MMU, the organisation of the programme this year was the third time being one of the main activities of the Rakan Muda Secretariat.
This was stated by the Senior Director of MMU Student Affairs, Zamzuri Abdul Majid when officiating the programme.
“I believe this is the appropriate time and place for students to gain experience, knowledge and soft skills and the importance of teamwork,” he said.
He also thanked UMS for rendering its cooperation and commitment in ensuring the smooth running of the programme.
Thorughout the programme, participants had the opportunity to conduct motivational programmes and teaching workshops with students at the village besides the adoption of host families.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Federal Youth and Sports Department (JBS) Sabah and was given a briefing on Rakan Muda development programmes and current youths involvement.
The closing ceremony was officiated by the Tenom District Education Officer, Azlan Dimon. – ZMD (fl)
