bendahari jumpa mppFRIDAY, 6 MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Acting Bursar, Zallifah Shaadan recently had a meeting with the Exco of the Student Representatives Council (MPP) of Labuan International Campus (KAL).

Accompanied by Senior Deputy Bursar, Saima Ismail, Zallifah said the programme was held to get first hand info on the problems faced by MPP.

Zallifah hoped the dialogue as well as question and answer session will clarify the problems faced by the students, especially those related to finance and tuition fees.

Also discussed was the entrepreneurship programme to encourage students to generate income to cover the expenses and cost of organising their planned activities.

Zallifah reminded students not to forget in paying their tuition fees to avoid any problems throughout the duration of their study at UMS.

Also present in the discussion were UMSKAL Head of Finance Division, Mohd Nazir Ab. Manan, Head of Student Affairs Division, Mas Adi Alimin and MPP Vice-President, Peter Amos. – SS (fl)

tanduo prof kTHURSDAY, 05 MARCH – Curfew in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) is the right action as

one of the efforts to prevent another incident in 2013, Tanduo invasion, from recurring.

According to the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage lecturer, Professor Dr. Kamarulzaman

Askandar, the curfew can be seen as a prevention of smuggling activities from the neighbouring

countries, since the surveillance now is more thorough and effective especially during the curfew time.

“The vast ocean making it hard to monitor immigrant entering our borders, especially since this area, Eastern Sabah geography, have lots of small islands.

“After the curfew was introduced, the national security team are able to control our territories and
borders and also successfully controlling smuggling activities, illegal immigrant and even another
invasion attempt,” he said while interviewed by TV3 journalist in remembrance of the bloody incident, two years ago.

Prof. Kamarulzaman, an expert in the conflict and peace-making areas also informed that the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) efforts during these two years are very effective.

“We have seen how ESSCOM hard work through their operation and integrated efforts in these two
years, ensuring no invasion happen again,” he said. Prof. Kamarulzaman was also involved in the
peace process between the Philippines Government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The Sulu militant invasion in 2013 was one of Malaysia darkest time; 10 Malaysian soldiers were

Dr asmady bengkelTHURSDAY, 05 MARCH – The Director of Universiti Malaysia Sabah Publisher, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asmady Idris mention that cooperation between both author and publisher are essential in ensuring the smoothness of publishing a book.

He added that, few factors are involved in delaying the publication process, including lack of cooperation given from the author.

“For example, when the writer or author fail to complete and send the essential chapters, such as introduction and conclusion.  When contacted by the publisher, there are authors failed to give their articles in the given time period. Thus, delaying the process,” he added.

Asmady also mention that among the other delaying factor is also when the reviewer taking their time reviewing.

“Despite the obstacles, the publisher will remind those who are chosen to be the reviewer in ensuring them to fulfil their task and not lost their track of time. We will replace the reviewer if they cannot give their full commitment in ensuring the smoothness of the process,” he added more.

He was said mentioning it in front of thirty UMS academician and administration staff in a Book Writing Workshop held at Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancey (FPEP).

kal bengkel penulisanTHURSDAY, 05 MARCH – Two Universiti Malaysia Sabah Kampus Antarabangsa Labuan (UMSKAL) senior lecturer conducted ‘Action Research Report Writing Workshop’ held at Labuan Matriculation College (KML), recently.
 
The two lecturers are Dr. Zamhar Iswandono Awang Ismail and Dr. Muzaffar Hamzah, both attached to Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI), UMSKAL.
 
Chong Pei Yee, the programme Director said that the workshop was conducted to establish research culture and strengthen research activities among lecturers on improving student academic in accordance with Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013-2025).
 
The workshop was divided into three slots: Slot 1 Problem Study and Abstract Writing, Slot 2 Objective and Research Method, and Slot 3 Qualitative Data Analysis.
 
Information gained from this workshop can be used as guidance for them to do their own active research in the future. Hence, achieving the goal of this programme.
 
A total of 52 of KML lecturers attended the one-day workshop held at KML Library.

brahimsWEDNESDAY, 04 MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) continues to broaden their industry linkages through a memorandum of understanding with Brahim’s Airlines Catering (BAC), a key player in inflight services provider.

The collaboration between both parties was signed today in a ceremony at the Gallery, UMS.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah in his speech said that BAC, with their vast experience, is the perfect institutions for UMS students majoring in Food Service (HG09) to gain exposures and first-hand experiences working in the food service industry.

The collaboration between UMS and BAC begin since 2013 through industrial training programme where UMS students have their six month internship in the company.

“I hope, through this collaboration, more activities such as academic programmes, research and human capital development will be implemented for the benefits of mutual parties.”

“Hopefully, FSMP UMS and BAC will have our own products that will be serve in the menu both in domestic and even international flight,” he said.

BAC Chief Executive Officer, Ainul Hasnizam Abu Hassan also mention that their previously similar programme with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam was a success. The previous programme with the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management had shown positive impact specifically in the areas of food research.

“Hopefully during these five years of collaborations, both parties will be actively involved in the activities. BAC will always give their cooperation especially when it’s involving enhancing knowledge,” he said.

Through the memorandum of understanding, both parties will collaborate in few activities including industrial training, R&D product development, academician attachment, FSMP panel industry advisor, and also research programme with FSMP researchers. -MA(JA)-
